Storm system to cool Phoenix heat

play

After weeks of near-record temperatures, long-awaited cooler weather is arriving in the Phoenix area about a month into the fall season.

This year's hot season was the longest and hottest in Arizona's history. High temperatures broke or broke daily records over the past 20 days.

Both September and October exceeded the average temperatures from 1991 to 2020. September 2024 exceeded the average high temperature of the month by six degrees, while October exceeded the average high temperature so far by 15 degrees.

However, temporary fall weather is expected to arrive this weekend with a storm system with temperatures below 80 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

Here's everything you need to know about what to expect this week.

What will the weather be like in Phoenix this week?

Phoenix residents are expected to enjoy temporary relief from the heat before temperatures rise again next week, according to meteorologist Alex Edwards of the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

Temperatures were expected to dip below triple digits on Tuesday and gradually cool before a storm hits the Phoenix metropolitan area on Friday. Highs were expected to be in the low to mid 90s through Thursday and were unlikely to reach the 80s on Friday and Saturday.

The weather: Can meteorologists predict the weather for 90 days? Why long-term prospects are so complicated

Highs are expected to remain in the low 80s Sunday and into early next week, Edwards said.

The storm was also expected to bring light rain on Friday and Saturday, but the chance of rain was expected to disappear by Sunday.

Edwards also advised residents to be aware of potentially windy conditions ahead of the storm. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph and possibly higher speeds are expected Friday as storm activity increases.

However, the cooling trend was not expected to continue following the storm. Warmer weather is expected to return by the middle of next week, with high temperatures back in the mid-90s, Edwards said.

“Unfortunately, it (cooler weather) isn’t going to last,” Edwards said. “We expect temperatures to rise again after that, but it will be a few more days where it will remain even cooler than before.”

For Phoenicians waiting for the crisp fall feel, an average high in the mid-80s was expected for the last week of October.
