Status of Bay Area School Districts

TAMPA, Fla. – School districts across the Bay Area are assessing their situation for resumption of operations following Hurricane Milton.

Here is a list of the latest information on Bay Area counties:


HILLSBOROUGH: In a statement Monday, the school system said, “Hillsborough County Public Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, October 15, due to recovery efforts following Hurricane Milton.”

In a news release, school officials said, “Despite the recovery efforts, we need at least another day before we can safely reopen schools. Schools and district offices will remain closed on Tuesday, October 15th. We will continue to work closely with TECO on recovery efforts and will provide an update tomorrow.”

Officials listed the status of the district campuses:

  • Around 100 schools are without power
  • There is still water in more than a dozen schools
  • Food deliveries for breakfast and lunch are delayed.
  • Many roads have hazards or traffic signals that don't work.

PINELLAS: In a statement Saturday, the school system said, “As much of the community and many Pinellas County Schools locations are without power, and Pinellas County Schools continues to house members of the community in emergency shelters, the district will remain closed Monday.” .October. All sports and activities are canceled.

No decision has been made for Tuesday, October 15th. The district will communicate this decision by noon on Monday, October 14th, based on the closure of emergency shelters and the stability of the power grid.

District operations staff continue to repair damage to our school sites. Once power is restored to our sites, operations staff will be able to carry out extensive repairs to ensure the health and safety of our buildings.”

PASCO: NEW: Pasco County schools will be closed Monday due to power outages and fuel issues.

POLK: Our team continues to work diligently to prepare for the reopening of PCPS schools for our students and staff.

However, our schools must remain closed on Monday, October 14th and Tuesday, October 15th. We expect to reopen our campuses to students on Wednesday, October 16th. Some PCPS district employees will return to work on Monday (October 14). 14) and school staff, including teachers, will return on Tuesday (October 15).

MANATEE: Monday, October 14, 2024, is a record day that has already been planned, so there will be no classes for students.

We hope that students will be able to return to school on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. A decision regarding a return on Tuesday will be made by Monday, October 14, 2024, 5:00 p.m.

HERNANDO: Hernando schools will not be open as planned on Monday. No announcement was made for Tuesday.

CITRUS FRUITS: The Citrus County School District will be open Monday, October 14th.

UPDATE: Due to lost class time due to the recent hurricanes, we will be making up the following days:

Monday, October 21st

Monday, November 11th

And December 20th will now be a full day of classes.

We know that October 21st was originally scheduled as fall break and November 11th is Veterans Day. However, we must meet the state's teaching hour requirements for the year. Please know that we value our veterans and plan to honor them in meaningful ways in our schools on November 11th.
