SSI recipients receive an additional check in November and none in December

Some Social Security recipients may receive a surprise in November: an extra check.

Don't worry about this if you're receiving Social Security, the situation isn't unusual. If you keep an eye on the Social Security Administration payment schedule, you may already have it under control.

Through a calendar twist, those Social Security recipients who also receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive three checks in November: two SSI payments in addition to their monthly Social Security check, a government-issued retirement income for those 62 and older.

However, SSI recipients will not receive a check in the following month of December. SSI recipients faced the same situation in August when they received two checks and no SSI check in September.

Christmas shopping season: Why a new survey predicts shoppers will spend more this year

Why do SSI recipients receive two checks in November?

The calendar oddity happens in November because Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits — additional payments over and above Social Security for people with little or no income and very limited resources — are available on the first business day of each month.

SSI recipients will receive their November payment on November 1st, but since December 1st falls on a Sunday this year, December SSI payments will be distributed on Friday, November 29th, according to the SSA calendar.

The 2025 calendar is also online and there will be similar calendar quirks next year. For example, SSI recipients will receive their January 2025 payment on December 31, 2024. They will then receive their February 2025 payment on January 31, 2025 and their March 2025 payment on February 28, 2025.

This means SSI beneficiaries will not receive a payment in the month of March. They will also receive two payments in May 2025, but none in June.

What is SSI?

SSI provides payments to people with limited sources of income, who are 65 years of age or older, blind, or people with a qualifying disability — including children with a qualifying disability — the SSA website says. For adults, SSI is generally intended for those who earn no more than $1,971 each month from work.

If you think you may be eligible for SSI benefits, a new, streamlined process for Americans to apply for SSI benefits is set to launch later this year.

November Social Security Payment Schedule

The Social Security Administration's annual distribution schedules are available online, so you can use the calendar for budgeting purposes.

Regular Social Security retirement benefits are paid according to the SSA's usual schedule:

◾ Wednesday, November 13th: Birth dates between the 1st and 10th of the month.

◾ Wednesday, November 20th: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month.

◾ Wednesday, November 27th: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.
