The sports doctor explains Robert Whittaker's injury compared to Khamzat Chimaev

In last night's co-main event of UFC 308, Khamzat Chimaev stormed in to secure a takedown and quickly assumed a dominant position along the cage before shattering Robert Whittaker's jaw for a first-round submission victory secured.

Almost immediately after the finish, fans and fighters alike began speculating about the severity of the injury, with the commentary team theorizing that Chimaev had dislocated Whittaker's jaw.

Dr. Brian Sutterer, a popular doctor who often describes martial arts-related injuries on his YouTube channel, has now released a short video that explains exactly what happened in Abu Dhabi.

“The attack was so strong and powerful that it broke Whittaker's lower jaw…At first it looked like a chokehold, but in reality Khamzat's left arm is on a part of Whittaker's jaw called the lower jaw; This is the lower part of your jaw that moves up and down. Your teeth in the lower part of your mouth are anchored in this lower jaw.

“This wasn't a jaw dislocation, there was some speculation about that, but based on an image that was shared, it was just so severe that Khamzat broke his jaw” – this image shows three of Whittaker's teeth being displaced into his mouth . Reader discretion is advised.

According to Dr. According to Sutterer, Whittaker's lower jaw teeth did not fall out, but rather the teeth were actually still attached and anchored to the lower part of the jaw; and it is the jaw itself that is broken, causing his teeth to be “displaced completely backwards.”

“In Whittaker's case, essentially these three front teeth, which are anchored in the lower part of the jaw, were crushed by the forearm that Khamzat Chimaev applied, resulting in a fracture, sending that part of the jaw and the teeth backwards into his mouth were moved.” .”

Although Dr. Sutterer did not have the benefit of a physical examination, he suggested what treatment options might be available for this “serious, serious injury.”

“Treatment for this will be some sort of surgery to put the teeth and bone back into place, placing plates and possibly braces over the teeth – there is a real possibility here that Robert Whittaker had his jaw closed with wires for some time has… This is a serious, serious injury.”

Bloody Elbow joins fans in wishing Robert Whittaker a safe and speedy recovery.
