Snow is expected to return this weekend as lower elevations become inundated with rain, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS forecasters said light snow was possible in areas above 9,000 feet beginning Friday. At lower elevations – including the foothills and metropolitan area – isolated showers and thunderstorms may occur.

“Yes, that is snow in the forecast!” NWS forecasters said. “There is some uncertainty regarding the storm track – but check back if you have travel plans!”

Warmer-than-average weather across Colorado has delayed annual snowfall, and the Denver area may not see its first snowfall until mid-November, nearly a month later than normal, according to NWS forecasters.

According to NWS data, the first snow in Denver in the last decade fell once in September, four times in October, four times in November and once in December.

This weekend, high mountain passes — including Hoosier Pass, Loveland Pass and Trail Ridge Road Summit — have about a 50 percent chance of seeing at least 4 inches of snow between Friday and Saturday, forecasters said.

Snow is expected to begin around midday Friday and continue through Sunday before clearing overnight into Monday, according to NWS forecasters.
