Small plane crashes near East 66th Street; Pilot killed

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The pilot of a small plane that crashed near Habersham Street and East 66th Street Sunday evening has died, according to Savannah police. One passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Several homeowners in the area said it was a small Cesna plane that crashed in a neighborhood.

According to Flight Aware, the plane is registered to Marti Jorge of Miami. We were told it was a flight from Miami to Savannah. The aircraft is a 1964 CESSNA 336, a 4-seat, multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft.

The IAFF Savannah Firefighters social media said: “Savannah Union Firefighters responded to the area of ​​Habersham Street and East 66th Street for a downed aircraft. At approximately 9:46 p.m., Savannah Fire was notified of a downed aircraft with unknown injuries or entrapment. A full technical rescue operation (TRT) was dispatched for the operation. The first arriving unit confirmed the crash and informed unit responses of two trapped patients. Savannah Union Firefighters from IAFF Local 574 worked diligently to free the patients so they could be transported to a hospital. This is an active scene. The area will be closed to allow for an investigation and removal of the aircraft.”
