Short thoughts | Purdue 99, Grand Valley State 41 (exhibition game)

Things couldn't have gone much differently for Purdue in its second and final exhibition game before next week's season opener than its six-point loss at #15 Creighton.

Purdue was at home in this game, playing against an inferior Grand Valley State team. It didn't take long for Purdue to take control of the game, winning Grand Valley State 99-41.

Unlike Creighton, Painter didn't have to stick with his starters for long.

Braden Smith only played 18 minutes, but the junior made the most of it. Smith had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, showing his all-around game after scoring 31 points in over 30 minutes against Creighton.

Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn stuck to Big Three history, both scoring 15 points despite playing 18 and 16 minutes, respectively. Kaufman-Renn also dominated on the glass, going for a double-double and grabbing five offensive and five defensive rebounds.

But the big three weren't so isolated in this game, as Myles Colvin came into the game early and scored seven points with a three-pointer, a drive and a layup, as well as a put-back layup after an offensive rebound. Colvin would finish with 10 points after hitting a second three-pointer in the second half.

Purdue's freshmen performed even better in their first game at Mackey Arena.

CJ Cox had 15 points and showed off his ability to make mid-range jumpers, jumpbacks and get to the free throw line. Cox made all six of his free throw attempts as well as three assists and two steals while continuing to showcase his two-way game.

Gicarri Harris also impressed with 10 points, 4 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. Harris was back to square one.

Matt Painter changed the starting lineup and put Daniel Jacobsen in place of Will Berg. The big freshman seemed a little more relaxed in his second game. Jacobsen had 6 points and 2 rebounds and didn't miss a single shot in 14 minutes of play.

Will Berg showed off his rebounding after being held without a ball against Creighton. This time he got 6 rebounds and 6 points in 18 minutes of action and stayed out of foul trouble.
