Shane Steichen didn't consider using Anthony Richardson

MINNEAPOLIS — When Shane Steichen discussed his decision to bench Anthony Richardson and turn to Joe Flacco earlier this week, the Colts head coach emphasized that he made that decision for the foreseeable future rather than keeping Flacco on a short leash allow.

Flacco struggled in Minnesota and led an Indianapolis offense that posted its worst performance of the season in a 21-13 loss on NBC's “Sunday Night Football.”

Despite the team's problems, Steichen did not consider handing the ball back to Richardson as the game progressed.

“No, I didn’t,” Steichen said.

Richardson has moved to the team's No. 2 position, a role that limits his practice snaps to scout team reps but also requires the 22-year-old to be ready to come into play at a moment's notice should something happen to Flacco .

“I was proud of him,” wide receiver Alec Pierce said. “He came in and kind of worked with all his might and took on the role that was given to him. He plays quarterback on the scout team, he does his best, looks good and tries to get better.”

A move to Richardson midway through the game would also likely have represented a departure from the game plan the Colts had developed for Flacco throughout the week.

Richardson stayed engaged and celebrated with his teammates when he had a chance, even though the Colts' offense against the Vikings didn't offer much to be excited about.

“(Richardson handled) it well,” wide receiver Josh Downs said. “He still loves the boys, he’s still part of the team.”
