See how they're running: Peskin and Lurie are neck and neck in the mayoral race, according to a new poll

Mission Local publishes campaign reports for each of the major candidates in the mayoral race, rotating between candidates weekly through November. This week: Aaron Peskin. Read previous broadcasts Here.

This Sunday, just days after telling Mission Local that he never releases a poll to the press, Jim Stearns, campaign adviser for Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin's campaign for mayor, released the poll two Surveys to the press.

A poll by the public policy research institute Public Policy Research in early October showed Peskin in third place with 17 percent. The next, an identical poll conducted weeks later on October 18 and 19, shows Peskin tied with Daniel Lurie at 25 percent; London Breed is in third place with 18 percent and Mark Farrell is in fourth place with 15 percent.

“Terrible, right?” Stearns said when contacted about his about-face. “This is a dire circumstance.” This dire circumstance comes as several other polls do not show Peskin in the lead, including one from Sextant Strategies & Research released today by San Francisco Chroniclebased on data collected on October 15th and 16th. “We thought we should add our survey since our survey is literally the latest and most current,” Stearns says.

The chronicle The poll shows that Lurie and Breed were almost tied for first place with 23 and 24 percent of the vote, respectively — and that Lurie came away with 56 percent of the vote after all the ranked-choice votes were counted. Of people who responded to this poll, 18 percent said Peskin was their first choice (up from 12 percent in August, but he was eliminated in the fourth round).

In such a close race, a lead of a few percentage points in any poll is pretty doubtful due to the margin of error. The latest poll released by Peskin's campaign assumes a 4 percent margin of error – and says 11 percent of San Francisco voters still haven't decided who they'll vote for mayor. The chronicle The poll has a margin of error of 3.5 percent and puts the number of voters who have not yet made up their minds at 13 percent.

The race to convince these undecided voters is on. And there's a lot of money in it. Mission Local reported Friday that Daniel Lurie donated an additional $1.75 million to his own campaign in October alone, bringing his total fundraising to $8.93 million, of which $8.04 million was Dollars came from their own pockets. According to recent campaign documents, much of this will be spent on advertising.

For months, the Peskin campaign has been running a volunteer, grassroots campaign that focuses on door-to-door canvassing, house parties, vendor walks and one-on-one conversations with undecided voters and securing progressive support. In recent weeks, these efforts have only intensified.
