Unofficial results from the county elections office show candidates supported by conservative groups in Hamilton County school board elections were defeated by their opponents.

Voters cast their ballots Tuesday for about 800 school board seats across the state, and partisan politics played a role again in Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville — even though those elections were officially nonpartisan.

As of 10:43 p.m., all Hamilton County precincts had reported results. IndyStar has called school board races based on unofficial results from the Hamilton County Election Office.

Shapiro and Wheeler win Carmel Clay School Board race

Jon Shapiro and Kristina (Kris) Wheeler, backed by the “nonpartisan” political action committee Support CCS, defeated their conservative opponents in the race for two at-large seats on the Carmel Clay School Board.

Robin Clark and Dina Ferchmin were endorsed by the “conservative” political action committee Carmel Excellence.

Candidates backed by a conservative group have suffered defeat in the race for the Hamilton Southeastern School Board

Candidates backed by the local conservative group Fishers One lost in the race for seats in the Hamilton Southeastern School Board's Delaware Township, Fall Creek Township and Wayne Township.

The results come just two years after a slate of candidates backed by Fishers One defeated its four opponents and took control of the school board.

Two candidates ran for each seat on the seven-member board in this election. Conservatives will continue to hold the majority, even though moderate candidates Sarah Parks-Reese and Latrica Schooley defeated their conservative opponents.

The Conservatives supported by Fishers One in this election were Greg Lannan, Terry Tolle and John Stewart.

Incumbents Parks-Reese and Suzanne Thomas and newcomer Schooley were endorsed by the Hamilton Southeastern Education Association. The teachers union generally sides with Democrats, although Thomas describes himself as a conservative and has voted with the majority on several issues.

Moderate candidates win Noblesville School Board election

Three moderate candidates for at-large Noblesville School Board seats won.

Six candidates ran on two opposing three-candidate lists – one list was conservative and the other was moderate. The three candidates with the most votes were elected.

Conservatives Brad Helvey, David Dawson and Alison Hanley were endorsed by the Indiana Family Action PAC, while moderates Christi Crosser, Stephanie Lambert and Bret Richardson were endorsed by the Noblesville Teachers Forum.

Crosser and Lambert are current incumbents on the board.
