Maybe it was because it was a day game and the building was full.

Maybe it was because the Flyers were in the basement of the NHL, one point ahead of the last-place San Jose Sharks, who were supposed to be there.

Maybe it was because a turnaround had begun in the second half of Wednesday's most recent loss and they were ready to show coach John Tortorella he was right when he said Friday, “We're not that bad.”

Whatever it was, the mood at the Wells Fargo Center felt different Saturday afternoon. Captain Sean Couturier strapped his boys onto his surgically repaired back and scored a hat trick and two assists. Travis Konecny, who was listed as a daily starter on Friday, had a goal and four assists, and Russian phenom Matvei Michkov had a goal and an assist.

The result was an impressive, hard-fought 7-5 win over one of the NHL's top teams, the Minnesota Wild. It was the Flyers' second win of the season in eight games and their first home win while also ending a six-game losing streak.

Couturier brought the Flyers onto the field after 78 seconds and pounced on a juicy rebound from a point shot by Rasmus Ristolainen. If you couldn't tell from his reaction, it was huge for the team and him. His last goal was on February 10th – before he got the “C” – and it was career point No. 500.

And the Flyers continued to apply pressure. Nick Seeler, who scored one goal in 71 games last season and has only six goals in his Flyers career, put the puck in the high slot after a great pass by two Wild skaters from Konecny. Seeler ran through the middle and waited patiently before firing a shot past Filip Gustavsson.

It was the start the Flyers wanted. They assessed the situation and finally found their transition game. And they scored two of their three shots in the first period.

“Yeah, it's important for us to get off to a good start and of course Coots got us started there with a good shot from Risto,” Minnesotan Seeler told 97.5 The Fanatic during the first break, “and then there was a damn good shot from.” TK and his side opening.”

But going into the day, the Wild haven't lost in regulation this season for good reason. In the second period, Brock Faber turned in the middle after a pass to Kirill Kaprizov and deflected his shot past Sam Ersson. Then, 33 seconds later, Marcus Foligno moved the puck out of his zone on a three-on-one and held it while the Flyers backchecked before scoring from the slot.

Michkov put the Flyers back in front on a delayed penalty with a shot from above the circle after running up the middle, similar to his goal on Wednesday against the Capitals. That goal stood for 100 seconds as Joel Eriksson Ek scored on a power play for Minnesota after the Flyers had called on too many players to make it 3-1.

The Wild took a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but as mentioned, the mood of this game was different. The Flyers' power play did something it couldn't do last year – it helped them get back into the game. Konecny, standing in his spot near the left post, buried the puck after Morgan Frost's shot hit the side boards.

Less than four minutes later, Couturier added his second goal of the game, slamming the puck into the net on his third attempt. “Coots” rained down from the faithful before Jacob Middleton once again brought the event home at 5 p.m.

But don't count the Flyers out, as they showed last season. After a mad scramble at the top, defenseman Ristolainen crashed into the net and jammed the puck in to give the Flyers the lead with 2:24 left. Couturier capped the hat trick with an empty-net goal and the Flyers handed the Wild their first regulation loss.

Outliers

Before the game, the Flyers announced that Jett Luchanko had been returned to the juniors. … The Flyers also announced they will be without top defenseman Cam York for at least two weeks due to an upper-body injury.
