Scores for Anthony Davis and LeBron James in the Lakers' loss to the Suns

Well, no one expected the Lakers to come into the game 82-0. And as far as frustrating losses go, Monday ranks pretty low.

The Lakers took an early lead, but the Suns stormed back after these two teams met over the weekend. The second half was a back and forth affair that ultimately worked in Phoenix's favor.

That's not to say there weren't aspects of the game that weren't frustrating, and we'll get into that later. But the Lakers were going to lose sooner or later, and it's not the worst way to lose games if it comes after a hard-fought game in which a lot went wrong.

So let's drive into the loss. As always, grades are based on each player's expectations. The grade “B” represents the average performance of that player.

Anthony Davis

36 minutes, 29 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 12-24 FG, 0-2 3PT, 5-6 FT, +14

The only negative to take away from AD's game is that he may not have scored as many goals as expected after his red-hot first quarter. In the first 12 minutes alone, AD lost 16 points and managed 13 points later on.

One reason for this was that the Suns paid a lot of attention to him. Part of that was also having a bunch of other people show up. But there's nothing bad about Davis' performance, including on defense, where he's still a monster.

Grade: A

Rui Hachimura

31 minutes, 20 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 8-18 FG, 3-3 3PT, 1-1 FT, +20

While JJ Redick and AD have received a lot of praise this season, Rui has flown under the radar. That will no longer be the case after Monday.

Rui was great, recording the seventh 20-10 game of his career and fifth with the Lakers. This despite missing a few bunnies/dunks and having a few shots blocked by Kevin Durant.

But then again, I thought he defended KD as well as one can. It was a great start for Rui and the trend is increasing.

Grade: A

LeBron James

36 minutes, 11 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3-14 FG, 2-5 3PT, 3-6 FT, -17

So.

I'm not sure I can remember a worse game for LeBron in a Lakers jersey than this one. He had a very strange aura or energy throughout the game. I'm not sure if he felt it after trying so hard against Sacramento, but this was one of the strangest games he's had in a long, long time.

There's a bigger question about LeBron this season. His first two games were largely disappointing and while his third game was fantastic, this game was miserable.

Right now it's nothing more than something to monitor. Currently…

Grade: F

D'Angelo Russell

33 minutes, 14 points, 1 rebound, 8 assists, 5-13 FG, 2-9 3PT, 2-2 FT, +0

There were some pretty big swings here between Good D'Lo and Bad D'Lo. Early on, he threw pennies to both AD and Max Christie. He later missed some very good shots before being substituted late for Gabe Vincent.

Although he appears to be making slow progress, D'Lo's start to this season has been pretty rocky, save for a few brief moments. And until he can be positive on offense, he won't finish games.

Grade: C+

Austin Reaves

38 minutes, 23 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 8-15 FG, 5-9 3PT, 2-3 FT, +12

It largely explains how good Reaves was — and how bad LeBron — that I wanted the ball in his hands late to play a two-man game with AD. He performed tremendously down the stretch and made some very timely throws.

Again, it's still early, but the jump that many fans expected from Austin last season could be coming this season.

Grade: A

Jaxson Hayes

13 minutes, 4 rebounds, -18

Man, as good as the Lakers' bench lineup looked over the weekend, they were terrible on Monday. Hayes seemed lost on offense at times, doing little more than catching passes and making dribble handoffs without much purpose.

It's an evening where you really wish someone like CHristian Wood was on hand to add some variety.

Grade: F

Gabe Vincent

19 minutes, 3 points, 1-3 FG, 1-2 3PT, -5

It's difficult to get an overview of Gabe's season so far. I wouldn't say it was great. He struggled a lot on offense, even though he made a timely 3-pointer on Monday, but I liked what he did on defense.

That being said, what will stand out most to fans on Monday is that he was upset by KD on the switches, which isn't really his fault, but rather a byproduct of the defensive strategy and the fact that KD is really good.

Grade: C-

Max Christie

23 minutes, 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 2-4 FG, 1-1 3PT, -13

While I appreciate his aggressiveness and praised it last season, I need Christie to have a different plan of attack at the rim other than jumping off two feet and trying to dunk everyone with two hands.

Grade: B-

Dalton Knecht

11 minutes, 1 rebound, 0-3 FG, 0-1 3PT-13

I would say that Knecht looks like a rookie for the first time this season. I would also imagine that Phoenix had a much better idea of what to expect from Knecht in the second meeting against Knecht than in the first.

Grade: D

JJ Redick

After the game, JJ Redick took the blame for that loss, particularly because of the 14 points the team scored in the second quarter.

This is quite a change from the previous coach. However, that doesn't excuse such things from happening. The Lakers looked completely lost in that second quarter and it was a stroke of luck for them to even be in the game.

In short, he looked like a rookie head coach tonight.

Grade: C

DNP from Monday: Cam Reddish, Bronny James

Inactive on Monday: Jalen Hood-Schifino, Maxwell Lewis, Christian Koloko, Quincy Olivari, Armel Traore, Jarred Vanderbilt, Christian Wood
