Police are investigating a shooting on the campus of San Diego State University Thursday afternoon.

The shots rang out near the streetcar stop on campus near Campanile Drive and Hardy Avenue, school officials said.

Authorities told the Aztec community at 5:45 p.m. that police had confirmed that one person had been shot and taken to the hospital, and that a second person had been arrested. Police later told NBC 7 that two people had been arrested and they were searching for a third person.

SDSU reported that neither the victim nor the suspect are associated with the school.

As of 6 p.m., there was still a large police presence at the scene, a large area cordoned off with crime tape, and curious students and others watching. At this point, a police helicopter was circling overhead and buildings were also being searched.

A little less than half an hour later, school officials said police had a person in custody believed to be the shooter and that a weapon had also been recovered.

Despite the presence of onlookers near the tram stop, campus officials continued to urge everyone on campus to stay indoors and be vigilant until the situation is resolved with active police.

“After a thorough search, police determined that the third suspect believed to be connected to the incident is not on or near campus,” SDSU said in an shortly before 8 p.m Message your campus community. “There is no danger to the campus community and the police have given the all-clear.”

The victim's health condition is currently unknown.

According to school authorities, all activities, including classes, have been canceled for the night.
