Say goodbye to warm weather as colder temperatures are expected

POCATELLO — The National Weather Service in Pocatello predicts colder temperatures, rain and snow, and breezy winds are on the way.

“We are tracking a series of cold fronts developing from the Pacific. One will roll in later today Wednesday night into Thursday and another will roll in late Thursday night into Friday,” said Carter MacKay, an NWS meteorologist.

MacKay said the first cold front is expected to bring scattered showers and some wind. See the graphic below.

“We are still forecasting that temperatures across the Snake Plain will be the coldest since the spring and that temperatures should be between 20 and 30 degrees for everyone,” he said.

According to a graphic from NWS, morning low temperatures will continue to be cold over the weekend. On Saturday, temperatures are forecast to be 25 degrees in Idaho Falls, 12 degrees in Island Park, 27 degrees in Pocatello and 23 degrees in Rexburg.

Interestingly, temperatures in October were well above normal. There were two record highs on October 15th. It reached 79 degrees in Pocatello, matching the previous record of 79 set in 1973. It reached 78 degrees in Idaho Falls, breaking the previous record of 76 set in 1958.

“This was by far the warmest start to October in recent history,” MacKay said.

As for the other cold front, snowfall could occur at lower elevations on Thursday night. According to an NWS graphic, areas including Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Rexburg could see less than an inch of snow.

MacKay said the first day the region accumulates at least an inch of snow is usually in November.

With colder temperatures ahead, NWS has stopped issuing freeze warnings and freeze warnings. Meteorologists advise that if additional vegetables need to be harvested, they should be harvested by Thursday afternoon.

“Plan in advance that there may be some wintry travel conditions, especially if traveling over mountain passes, particularly in eastern Idaho and Wyoming. “We could see several inches of snow accumulating in places like Teton Pass,” MacKay added.
