The New Orleans Saints face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in Inglewood. The away team hopes to end a five-game losing streak. You can follow the score and live updates here.

This will be the first time the Saints and Chargers have played since October 12, 2020, when New Orleans earned a 30-27 overtime win at the Superdome.

The Saints are again relying on Spencer Rattler at quarterback while Derek Carr is still trying to return from an oblique injury. This will be Rattler's third straight start.

UPDATED, 3:33 p.m.: Oh my God. Dissly had a chance for a big gain, and Herbert stepped into the pocket and put the ball right on his hands, and Dissly dropped it. If he had thought of that, he would have had plenty of room to run.

So the Saints get away with one and then take advantage of a safety blitz with Ugo Amadi (!) to drop Herbert and force another punt.

This time the snap and punt are fine. The Saints will take over at around 15 years old.

UPDATED, 3:30 p.m.: The Chargers finally get a first down with a pass from Justin Herbert to Will Dissly on second-and-8, and Herbert goes 14 yards to rookie receiver Ladd McConkey.

There aren't many household names at the talent positions in LA, and McConkey, who was questionable all week, is crucial to them now that he can play.

Taysom Hill may not have played defense, but he only forced one safety. A botched punt by the Chargers brings the Saints onto the field. Hill threw the ball out of the end zone when he couldn't recover it for a touchdown.

UPDATED, 3:25 p.m.: Jermaine Jackson and Kendre Miller almost botched the Chargers' free kick after the safety, but Jackson is able to rebound off Miller, make the catch and make a nice return at the 34.

A hold call immediately puts the Saints on second-and-long, and although Rattler gains 14 yards on a pass to Hill, he is incomplete after the rollout on third down and the Saints have to punt again.

Many expected a defensive battle. Well, halfway through the first quarter it's 2-0.

UPDATED, 3:21 p.m.: Well, the decision pays off with another three-pointer, although we'll see what the Saints' field position is. Justin Herbert almost stumbled on that third down play, but he barely managed to get his arm forward before he was hit by Alontae Taylor.

Wait, forget field position – Chargers punter JK Scott can't handle a wide punt snap and the ball gets knocked around in the end zone, resulting in a safety for the Saints!

UPDATED, 3:13 p.m.: The Saints' ground force fails on a third-and-1 just past midfield, where Kamara is blocked.

You'd think it would be a day when Dennis Allen would throw caution to the wind, but he'll be punting from +48.

Matthew Hayball's punt bounces inside the 10… and hits the pylon! Bad break there and only a 28 yard net on the punt. I don't like this decision from Allen.

UPDATED, 3:10 p.m.: It's already been a wild day in the NFL, with the Dolphins losing to the Cardinals and the Ravens falling to the Browns. So maybe this is a good sign for the Saints.

What is definitely a good sign is a three-pointer for the New Orleans defense on the Chargers' first drive. It's Jermaine Jackson who returns the punt and he has some space but doesn't get much.

Spencer Rattler and the Saints start at their own 21. We'll see what the offense looks like with the additions to the offensive line.

Another really good sign: Alvin Kamara goes behind a block from Taysom Hill for 23 yards, the Saints' longest run so far this season.

UPDATED, 2:25 p.m.: Punt returns could be interesting today. According to SI.com's Saints reporter John Hendrix, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Jermaine Jackson and…Ugo Amadi caught punts for the Saints before the game.

UPDATED, 2:04 p.m.: Welcome to week eight of the New Orleans Saints live blog here at NOLA.com. I'm Zach Ewing, deputy sports editor for the Times-Picayune, here to bring you some play-by-play and a lot of analysis and reaction from today's Saints game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

It will be Spencer Rattler's third game for the Saints, who are hoping starting quarterback Derek Carr returns from an oblique injury for next Sunday's game at Carolina.

In the meantime, New Orleans could desperately use a win here, not only to overcome a demoralizing five-game loss after two blowout wins to open the season, but also because the NFC South is still up for grabs. The Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently play in Tampa; The winner has a 2.5 game lead over the Saints and the loser has a 1.5 game lead.

Yes, that's right: The Saints still have a chance to make the playoffs, especially given a weak second half of the schedule, but they need to start winning. And a surprise win for Rattler today would be just the ticket.

Carr is one of the Saints' declared inactives; Another is wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who the Saints signed this week but who apparently isn't ready to referee live games yet.

Perhaps more notable is who isn't on the inactive report: The Saints are bringing back Chris Olave, Taysom Hill, Cesar Ruiz and Pete Werner today after an absence of several weeks, and Marshon Lattimore, who was injured in last week's game against the Broncos, is also good to go.
