Rutgers fails to show up and suffers a stunning loss to Wisconsin

Rutgers returned home with a record of 4-1 and was able to earn a resounding win against a team it had never beaten before.

The Scarlet Knights entered the race as favorites in front of a sombre crowd at SHI Stadium. Ultimately, the team delivered an uninspiring performance as it looked like they never left the locker room.

Wisconsin marched up and down the field all afternoon, racking up 549 yards, including 309 on the ground. As for Rutgers, the offense couldn't get going over the course of four quarters during a 42-7 loss to the Badgers in Piscataway. Rutgers is now 0-6 against the Badgers.

In the first half, Rutgers punted six times, turned the ball over on downs and missed a field goal. The Scarlet Knights were lucky and only trailed 14-0, partly due to a miscue on a deep ball by Braedyn Locke that resulted in an interception. The Badgers didn’t let Rutgers hang around in the second half.

Tawee Walker got what he wanted on the ground for Wisconsin, totaling 198 yards and three touchdowns. The Badgers scored touchdowns on four of seven possessions in the second half and did so on the ground. The Scarlet Knights punted three more times and turned over once in the final two quarters.

The Scarlet Knights were rattled heading into the contest with linebacker Tyreem Powell and cornerback Robert Longerbeam out. This meant Rutgers was without both starting linebackers under center. This was known before the competition, but the plan was not there.

Luke Fickell, Phil Longo and the entire Wisconsin coaching staff had a big day in Piscataway. From offense to defense to special teams, the Badgers won every aspect of the contest — and that may have included the noise from the fans.

Greg Schiano and his staff were clearly outclassed on Saturday. That's three straight appearances in which Rutgers was heavily outplayed. This includes the win over Washington, where the Huskies did everything they could to win the game.

What does that mean for six weeks? That means conversations need to happen about what drives this team forward. The answers can come from none other than Schiano and his team with their performances in the coming weeks.
