Rookies Stainbrook and Morris score as Washington Spirit defeats Chicago 2-0

Heather Stainbrook scored her first professional goal as the Washington Spirit defeated the visiting Chicago Red Stars 2-0 in the National Women's Soccer League on Sunday.

Heather Stainbrook scored her first professional goal as the Washington Spirit defeated the visiting Chicago Red Stars 2-0 in the National Women's Soccer League on Sunday.

It was the Spirit's 10th home win this season (17-6-2), the most in league history. Washington remains second in the NWSL standings (53 points) thanks to a goal difference advantage of four goals over NJ/NJ Gotham FC.

In the 31st minute, Tara McKeown's cross was deflected to a free Stainbrook at the back post. The rookie needed a touch to find his way and scored from a tight angle.

In the 72nd minute, both teams were reduced to 10 players when Rosemonde Kouassi and Ludmila received red cards for a scuffle.

In her second game back from a back injury, Trinity Rodman initiated the move that led to the Spirits' second goal in the 83rd minute, intercepting a pass and dribbling centrally before playing a hapless pass to Ashley Hatch. The striker pushed Alyssa Naeher off her line and then cut across goal from close range for Makenna Morris to finish. The rookie has scored five goals this season.

Naher made 10 saves for the Red Stars (10-13-2).

Officials announced that 17,065 spectators attended the game at D.C.'s Audi Field.

GOTHAM 3, PRIDE 1

The Orlando Pride conceded three goals for the first time this season and lost 3-1 to Gotham.

Sam Hiatt, Rose Lavelle and Ella Stevens all scored goals for host Gotham (16-4-5).

After going undefeated through the first 23 games of the season, the Pride (17-2-6) have now suffered two straight losses. Orlando has already secured the NWSL Shield and is guaranteed the top seed in the playoffs.

Gotham, which has not lost in seven straight games, scored the first goal in the 13th minute. Stevens redirected a corner kick and Hiatt was the last player to touch the bouncing ball before it slipped into the corner at the near post.

After Barbra Banda was shot down in the penalty area, Adriana sent her penalty into the right corner in the 31st minute, equalizing for the Pride.

The Pride failed to clear a cross just before halftime, allowing Lavelle to score with a wide-open shot.

In the 49th minute, Lavelle found Bruninha in the box, who shot the ball across the goal for Stevens to shoot into the net.

Stevens and Lavelle both scored seven goals this season, a career-best.

After the game, Gotham recognized Kelley O'Hara, who announced her retirement earlier this season. Several of her U.S. teammates, including Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Ali Krieger, attended the ceremony.

ANGEL CITY 1, ROYALS 1

Claudia Zornoza scored on her 34th birthday as Angel City and the visiting Utah Royals played to a 1-1 draw.

In the 21st minute, Zornoza scored a free kick and shot into the right corner from about 25 meters away.

She has two goals and three assists since joining Utah (7-14-4) in August.

Sydney Leroux equalized for Angel City (7-12-6) in the 57th minute, scoring her seventh goal of the season. With his back to goal at the top of the 18-yard penalty area, Leroux caught a ball with his chest, turned and volleyed it into the top left corner. 18-year-old Giselle Thompson received her first NWSL assist in this game.

The Royals finished the game with 21 shots, but Didi Haracic made nine saves for Angel City to keep her team in the game.
