Republicans saved Indiana from stagnant Democratic rule

play

In her recent guest column, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat in charge of her party's gubernatorial campaign committee, said Indiana “needs a governor who isn't afraid to face the tough issues and put Hoosiers first.” place.”

I wonder where Kelly thinks Indiana has been in the last 20 years. The Hoosier State has one of the best business environments in the country (CNBC), has the region's best-rated infrastructure (also CNBC), and levies the lowest income tax, with a flat rate of 2.9%.

Republican governors pushed through road projects, including investments to complete Interstate 69, US 31 and more – investments without increasing the gasoline tax for 10 years. Indiana's roads have improved greatly since I was a student and statehouse reporter in central Indiana.

This change came after 16 years of stagnant democratic rule from 1989 to 2005.

Of course there are some challenges. Former Gov. Mitch Daniels' big moves lasted just ten years, and the Republican-led Assembly is now reliant on double taxes on gasoline and diesel. But voters seem to like the move to lower income taxes — they continue to vote with a GOP supermajority.

So the Indiana Republican Party isn't in much trouble this election season. As a former state representative and now federal senator, U.S. Senator Mike Braun has learned to listen and compromise – to the point that it can sometimes anger the base. And his running mate is an undisciplined troublemaker who will learn the ropes once he understands that not every fight is an opportunity to brag about on talk radio and take away his freedom.

The alternative is an out-of-shape Democratic Party that doesn't know how to put forward a majority agenda. Abortion and “textbooks” are not enough.
