WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., wore blackface as part of a Halloween costume in 2006, according to a New York Times report.

Lawler is a Republican running in his first term in a hotly contested congressional race in New York's Hudson Valley, a district that President Joe Biden won in 2020 and is one of about two dozen seats up for control next year the US House of Representatives will decide.

In the photos obtained by the Times, Lawler, who is white, is seen wearing a black shirt and red jacket, his face is dark, and he appears to be dancing like Michael Jackson.

Lawler has repeatedly spoken about his Jackson fan base. In a statement to USA TODAY, he apologized and said the costume was “the sincerest form of flattery, a true tribute to my musical hero since I was a young child trying to walk through my mother's kitchen.”

“The ugly practice of blackface was the furthest thing from my mind,” he said. “Let me be clear, this is not that.”

“I'm a history major and I'm sorry to anyone who takes offense at the photo,” he said. “All you can do is live and learn, and I appreciate everyone’s grace along the way.”

Blackface has its roots in minstrelsy and began in New York City in the 1830s. It has long been recognized as dehumanizing and offensive. In recent years, photos have emerged of other politicians, entertainers and public figures, including former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and radio shock jock Howard Stern.
