Real Madrid-Barcelona: Kylian Mbappé sets unwanted offside record

Kylian Mbappé was caught offside eight times on Saturday – the most of his career classic – the highest total by any player in a LaLiga game in the last 15 years – as Barcelona beat Real Madrid 4-0.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice to take his season tally to a league-leading 14 goals before Lamine Yamal and Raphinha scored late to give Barça six points clear of Madrid at the top of the table.

Mbappé ended the game at the Bernabéu having fired three shots, all on target, but he was often frustrated by Barça's high defensive line, with two goals disallowed for offside.

The star striker has scored eight goals in all competitions since arriving in Madrid this summer, but failed to score in his biggest test yet.

Mbappé's eight offsides are the most by a player in a LaLiga game since 2009 and equal the unwanted record set by Elche's Jonathas against Athletic Club in May 2015.

After the game, Barça players praised the training of their coach Hansi Flick, who has made his offside trap the most effective in Europe's five major leagues.

“We have done this all season, the defensive work is spectacular,” said midfielder Marc Casadó. “It’s the work of the entire team. It’s amazing to be so brave and play such a high defensive line, but it’s working for us at the moment.”

“Flick is incredible,” Yamal said. “He arrived, there was a radical change in the dressing room. You can see that in the way we play. We have a lot of respect for him, he doesn’t have to shout or anything, he’s an incredible coach.”
