Real Madrid 1-3 AC Milan: The visitors scored three goals and recorded a statement win over Real in the UEFA Champions League

Real Madrid suffered their second defeat in the UEFA Champions League this season as AC Milan claimed an impressive 3-1 win at the Bernabeu.

Alvaro Morata returned to the Spanish capital to haunt his old side once again, while Vinicius Junior's penalty wasn't enough as goals from Malick Thiaw and Tijjani Reijnders earned the Italians a whopping three points.

Madrid fell behind for a third straight game – including two draws in the Champions League – when Milan took the lead through a Thiaw header. He found space between Aurelien Tchouameni and Eder Militao and scored his first goal for the club.

It didn't take long for Madrid to hit back from the penalty spot through Vinicius after he converted a penalty following a clumsy foul from Emerson Royal. The Brazilian primarily stepped up to take the penalty in place of Kylian Mbappe before firing it into the middle.

However, there would be more drama before the break as Morata emerged to put his new team back in front. Rafael Leao's shot was parried by Andriy Lunin, but Morata was the only player on alert as he reacted quickly enough to score his seventh goal against his old team.

Milan silenced the Bernabeu with a third goal from Reijnders, giving them an astonishing two-goal lead, and while Madrid threw everything at the away side in the closing stages in an attempt to mount a comeback, it was not to be as the team of Paulo Fonseca held out a memorable victory for a while.

Discussion point: Madrid are second best as the pressure on Ancelotti increases

Madrid suffered its second consecutive defeat while conceding seven goals. In their last Champions League game they came back from a two-goal deficit to beat Borussia Dortmund in impressive fashion, but on Tuesday the scenario was very different.

Carlo Ancelotti's side were easily the second-best team throughout the game, while the Italians were far more resilient in defense and far more determined going forward, which is worrying given the firepower they have added to their team.

This result leaves them 17th in the league stage table after four games, although surprisingly they are still one place ahead of Milan in 18th. The Italians surprised everyone with their performance at the Bernabeu after suffering two defeats in their last three Champions League games.

While Los Blancos are struggling in Europe and domestically – where they are already nine points behind Barcelona after their 4-0 Clasico defeat in La Liga – could Ancelotti be under pressure after the defeat to his old team?

Player of the Match – Alvaro Morata (AC Milan)

As if things couldn't get any worse for Real Madrid, Morata scored against them again and rubbed salt in the wounds. It is his seventh goal against his old club – more than against any other opponent in his career – in which he has played a total of 95 times in two phases.

The former Atletico Madrid player was booed at the Bernabeu earlier this year when he attended a friendly against Brazil with Spain in March, but it appears he has used that reception as motivation for his next visit.

Morata also scored his goal brilliantly, reacting to Leao's shot while everyone else was watching to score the ball in the crucial second.

Match highlights

6' – CHANCE FOR MBAPPE! The cross comes from the right, but the Frenchman can't get a grip on his foot as the chance flashes before his eyes! He should be better there.

12' – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 0-1 AC MILAN (THIAW): Madrid are behind again at the Bernabeu! It comes straight from Christian Pulisic's corner, where Malick Thiaw gets between Tchouameni and Eder Militao before sending a beautiful header past Lunin!

21' – PENALTY FOR MADRID! Vinicius shoots into the box from the left and Emerson Royal trips the Brazilian as he approaches the six-yard box, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

23' – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 1:1 AC MILAN (VINICIUS): Vinicius shoots the ball straight into the middle and Madrid equalizes! Above all, it was the Brazilian who took the penalty and not Mbappe…

38' – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 1-2 AC MILAN (MORATA): It just had to be him! Milan flies forward again down the right side and Pulisic finds Leao in the penalty area, who turns and shoots, but is able to parry his shot. Everyone stands still and watches the ball, except Morata, who pounces on the rebound and puts Milan back in the lead!

51' – What a save to deny LEAO! Leao handles Royal's cross and his header towards the back post forces a great save from Lunin! However, the danger is not clearly visible there and Hernandez storms into the penalty area before pulling back a cross that flies over the goal without making any contact. This is a missed opportunity for a third!

62' – MBAPPE GOES OUT! Modric fights for the ball on the edge of the penalty area and passes the ball on to Mbappé, who shoots past the goal!

73' – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 1-3 AC MILAN (REIJNDERS): Madrid are in big trouble at the Bernabeu! Leao shoots down the right wing, which was a problem for Madrid all evening. He finds Reijnders in the penalty area, completely free as the midfielder turns on the spot before firing Milan's third shot into the goal.

81' – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 2-3 AC MILAN (RUDIGER): There's another one for the home team! Rüdiger hits a half-volley into the almost empty goal after Maignan beats the ball clear from Ceballos.

84' – NO GOAL! Wow! VAR called it off due to an offside position in the build-up to the game. It looked as if he was just a few millimeters offside when Ceballos initially sent in the cross. Milan maintained their two-goal lead.

87' – MILAN SHOULD have FOUR! Madrid are torn open again as Hernandez finds Loftus-Cheek in the box who fires a shot from close range at Lunin! It's a good save from the goalkeeper, but the former Chelsea man really should do better!

89' – VINI SEND A HEADBUTTER TWIST! He comes into the six-yard box completely unmarked and directs the cross past the goal. This is a big mistake by the Ballon d'Or runner-up.

90'+2 – WHAT A PARTY! Or is this a very, very bad mistake on Brahim Diaz’s part? He's all alone in the penalty area when he intercepts a cross from the left, but he sends a header straight at Maignan, who parries it away with a strong right hand. Madrid had chances in the last few minutes, but it just didn't work!
