Rain expected across Illinois, storms on the way – NBC Chicago

The Chicago area is in for a rainy and chilly Monday, with more rain in the area in the evening and thunderstorms possible Tuesday, NBC 5 meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.

“The coolest day we’ve had so far this season,” Jeanes said Monday. Jeanes added that Monday afternoon would be the “coolest afternoon we've had this year since April.”

Rain and drizzle fell in Cook and Lake counties early Monday, with heavier precipitation in Will County and northwest Indiana. While the rain showers had ended around 6 a.m. in Illinois, Jeanes said another wave of showers was expected in Chicago as the morning commute picked up pace.

“More rain is moving into the city center in the next hour or so,” Jeanes said, adding that parts to the west were expected to remain dry. Heavier rain is expected around I-65, Jeanes said.

While the rain will ease in Illinois later this morning and into the afternoon, it is expected to continue in northwest Indiana, with intermittent rain throughout the afternoon, Jeanes said.

Rain chances for northeastern Illinois will increase again starting around 8 p.m. Monday, Jeanes said, with more rain expected overnight and into Tuesday morning, with a stormy commute possible.

“It will probably rain on the way to work tomorrow morning,” Jeanes said. “Some thunderstorms are also possible.”

Jeanes said rain showers were expected to continue in Chicago until Tuesday afternoon.

Frost possible

Jeanes said Monday marks the first day of the season with highs in the 50s.

Highs in the mid-50s were expected on Monday, Jeanes said, and highs in the low 50s on Tuesday. According to Jeanes, the average high temperature this time of year was 64 degrees.

Even cooler temperatures are expected in the morning, with frost possible in some places, said Jeanes.

“It will soon be cold over the next few nights,” Jeanes said, “with patches in the 30s tomorrow morning and rural areas below freezing Wednesday morning.”

However, temperatures were expected to rise again Wednesday afternoon, with highs in the upper 50s, with highs of 60 to 70 degrees Thursday and Friday and into the weekend.
