QB Russell Wilson “excellent” in Pittsburgh’s win over the Jets

However, a Beanie Bishop Jr. interception turned into a touchdown late in the first half that undid Wilson, and the offense marched down the field from there, scoring on the final five possessions of the game, including four touchdowns .

“First of all, I really believe in being neutral,” Wilson said when asked by the crowd about the negative reaction at the start. “Don’t be too high, don’t be too low. … Coming into this game, we had a couple things early on that we could have had. I felt like it was playoff baseball in the sense that I started 0-2, but I felt like I was going to get hot. I kept telling the coach I was going to get hot and sure enough we did.

Wilson posted 264 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, zero interceptions and a passer rating of 109.0 in Week 7 while adding a rushing score. It marked the most passing yards by a player in his Steelers debut and broke Earl Morrall's record of 249 in Week 1, 1957.

Wilson had a higher passer rating in Week 7 (109.0) than Fields did in each of his six starts in 2024 (Fields' highest rating was 104.0 in Week 4 at IND).

“The reality is there is so much more out there,” Wilson said. “That's the good news.” There's so much more out there and we're only getting better with time. We will continue working. There is a lot more football to come, but being where we are is a good place.

The inaccuracy derailed the Steelers' offense early and led to the early hook being called for. But Tomlin stuck with the 35-year-old and it paid off. Wilson hit George Pickens deep multiple times, helping open up a previously limited offense. His touch and ability to drive play improved the Steelers' passing attack compared to what we saw earlier in the season, particularly in the red zone.

“I think when I threw that first touchdown to George, I thought to myself, well, I think there's going to be a lot more of this,” Wilson said. “Sometimes it takes the first home run, the first double off the wall, whatever it may be. Obviously it's October so I'm talking baseball, but I just think if you put in all the hard work and the guys do the work. “At some point it's going to turn in your favor and that's what happened tonight.

The performance wasn't entirely different than some of Wilson's best games last season in Denver. When he hits those 50/50 balls to Pickens on the sideline, the Steelers' offense becomes dangerous. In the games they miss, it could be a grind. On Sunday evening it worked extremely well.

The 37 points scored by a Pittsburgh team were the most since Week 11, 2021, when Ben Roethlisberger was under center (41-37 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers).
