Purdue (1-3) vs. Wisconsin (2-2) personnel predictions

This season hasn't turned out the way any Purdue fan would have wanted. Now we travel with the team to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers in a game Purdue hasn't played this well in decades. So now that there's a new offensive coordinator, it's time to ask the staff.

Ledman (4-0):

I came to Purdue as a wide-eyed freshman in 2004. I saw College Gameday, Cold Pizza and the entire college football world turn their eyes to Purdue. It was an incredible time to be a fan. We all know how that game ended, and we all know that Purdue has lost every game against Wisconsin since then. I have little reason to believe that this will be any different.

Purdue changed their OC and I think that will make some difference, but I can't imagine it will be enough. Purdue faces a steep climb here. Unfortunately I have to take Wisconsin.

Kyle (3-1):

Purdue abruptly changed offensive coordinators, a move that was likely necessary. But the lack of personnel is a surefire problem for anyone who has ever committed a college offense before. Ryan Walters reached out to longtime Indiana high school football coach Jason Simmons, who was at various locations near Indianapolis.

That doesn't change the fact that Purdue is one of the worst rushing defenses in the country and one of the worst defenses overall. Of course some supplemental football would be beneficial, but I'm not sure a mid-season move changes anything about the program at the moment.

Wisconsin is currently -14 and they are just 2-2, which is what Vegas thinks about the Boilers. Wisconsin hasn't run the ball well this season, but will try out a new running back this week as former starter Chez Melusi retires from football.

Jed (4-0):

The more I delve into this game, the more I think Purdue has a chance to pull off an upset on the road here in Madison. Yes, better Purdue teams have struggled to get a win against the Badgers over the last twenty years, but this Wisconsin team could be the one where Purdue finally gets it done and gets the job done. But will they do that? I'm not so sure.

Wisconsin starts Braedyn Locke again while Tyler Van Dyke is out for the season with a torn ACL, while Wisconsin's offense has struggled to be consistent over the last two weeks (assuming it played two top-15 opponents). What works in Purdue's favor is that Wisconsin doesn't have the big receivers that could give the Boilers trouble in one-on-one coverage with healthy defensive backs like Nyland Green, Tarrion Grant, Kyndrich Breedlove and others. That means Purdue can focus solely on slowing down a good-but-not-great Wisconsin rushing attack and trying to make Locke uncomfortable in the pocket.

Purdue appears ready to take a more conservative approach on offense to slow the game down and drag opponents into the second half in a close game, similar to what they did against Nebraska. The question remains whether the offense will be able to score enough points to earn some wins against teams it should be able to compete with. Ultimately, I don't think it will happen on the road against the Badgers.

Ryan (4-0):

This prediction is conveyed to you by the letter B.

Can the Boilers hold their own against the Badgers without their best defender, or will Bucky beat the Boilers like they have since before some Boilers were even born?

I think there will be plenty of bad football between the Boilers and the Badgers.

Drew (1-3):

Oh, you think I'm tired of predicting Purdue wins? Do you think I've learned my lesson? It will take more than one OC change during the season to change my mind.

Jason Simmons launches his Broles Award campaign on Saturday. It turns out that Graham kept the playsheet upside down all season. Simmons will turn it over and the offense will click.

To quote Brendan Fraser in the comedy classic Encino Man: “El queso esta viejo y podrido. Donde esta el sanitario.” Purdue pulls off a surprise in Madison as Luke Fickell takes the lead over Ryan Walters and secures the hottest head coaching job in the Big 10.

Purdue: 24

Wisconsin: 17

Garrett (2-1*)

Editor's Note: Garrett was a coward and gave up two points against Oregon State, so I decided not to give him any credit regardless of the result.

Okay, nobody likes to play away in Wisconsin, and Purdue is going through a tumultuous little two-year stretch…

Defense was actually Ryan Walters' bread and butter, but it was bad, and now that the offense is failing and a coordinator has been fired, a big change needs to happen or it will spell disaster for the work of all the personnel involved. I hate to say it, especially considering the opponent is just 21-2, but the more viable miracle here isn't that Purdue looks completely different and more competent on offense; It's Wisconsin sleeping through a lunchtime game.
