Disney has made some magical animated films. However, there are controversial moments in some of these films that have angered audiences.

Moana was a huge success upon release, grossing over $687 million at the worldwide box office. In addition to receiving positive reviews, the film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including a nomination for Best Animated Film. Aside from the new animated sequel hitting theaters this year, the franchise will continue to expand with a live-action remake of the first installment Moana also in development. Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Maui in the live-action, but Catherine Laga'aia will be introduced as the new Moana in this film.

“We really tried to highlight Moana in the first film,” co-director Dana Ledoux Miller said (via EW) about where the story goes in the sequel. “We won’t reveal this version of the character. We build, not replace. In the first film, Moana showed incredible strength in her willingness to go into unknown danger for the sake of her people. But now she's responsibilities are changing, and we've never really seen her have to lead her people day to day. It was really important to us to show her development in this way.
