ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Election polls are now open across North Carolina, a key battleground state, that could influence whether the Republican nominee to replace former President Donald Trump returns to the White House or the Democratic nominee to replace Vice President Kamala Harris becomes the first female head of state.

Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5 and will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Unlike early voting, voters must go to their designated polling place on Election Day. Anyone in line at their assigned location by 7:30 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

ELECTION RESULTS

In addition to the presidential race, North Carolinians will elect a new governor on Tuesday. Democratic candidate Josh Stein and Republican Mark Robinson are the frontrunners in the fight to fill the seat of outgoing Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat who has led the state for two consecutive terms.

In the mountains, Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards is seeking re-election for the 11th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives against his Democratic challenger Caleb Rudow.

6:20 a.m.:Shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Election Day, a line of voters was already forming outside a polling station in Black Mountain.
