Police say a man was also shot behind white powder on signs at DNC offices in Tempe

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man was arrested for hanging suspicious bags of white powder on political signs in Ahwatukee and is also linked to the shooting at a DNC office in Tempe, police said Tuesday night.

Investigators did not release his name or say how they reportedly linked him to either series of crimes, but said they would receive more information Wednesday afternoon.

Arizona's family was present as police loaded a man into a police SUV in the area of 44th Street and Chandler Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon in response to the suspicious powder. It's unclear if this is the suspect, so we've blurred out his face.

The unknown powder attached to the political signs caused several intersections in Ahwatukee to be closed Tuesday.

These included Chandler Boulevard near 44th Street and 35th Street, as well as Ray Road and 50th Street.

Police later said the signs were also lined with razor blades.

Political signs and an unknown powdery substance were found at several locations in Ahwatukee.

It is unclear what substance was involved, but crews took no risks.

Signs with political messages and a bag of unknown white powder attached to them could be seen. The signs read messages such as “DEMS LIE” and “DEMS KILL JEWS.” Another read “Never Harris,” referring to Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.

One of the locations was near a church and the priest said there were some stressful moments.

“All of this is someone threatening to hurt people, especially when it comes to hurting children. It can’t get any more obscene,” said Fred Gerlach, pastor of the Family of Christ Luthern Church. “What worried me most was that I didn’t know if we were targeted because we are a school and a church.”

There have been no reports of injuries and we are still waiting to learn what substance was involved.

In Tempe, police said the same suspect fired three times at the Democratic field office near Southern Avenue and Priest Drive, most recently on Oct. 6. The other two shootings occurred on September 16 and 23.

According to police, the suspect fired pellets and shots at the office.

There was no one in the building at the time and the Democratic Party eventually closed the field office.

Again, it is unclear how the crimes are linked to a single man, but police will release more information on Wednesday.

“Unprecedented” political threats

Stan Barnes, a political consultant with three decades of experience, told Arizona's Family that he has never seen political threats and violence like this election cycle.

“People take photos of it. “People brag to their friends about what they've done and that makes everyone feel relevant and that's all negative,” Barnes said. “It seems to me that the bitter fruit of division that we are seeing in Arizona and across the country is one of the indications, one of the symptoms, that things are not right in the political public sphere.”

Barnes believes social media is contributing to the problem and that the situation cannot be resolved quickly.
