Phoenix record streak of daily heat reaches 3 weeks

PHOENIX – No, it's not the Monday blues, it's just Phoenix's record-breaking streak of daily heat that lasted three weeks.

The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city's official records, reached 101 degrees at 2:40 p.m. The previous record of 100 degrees was set in 2020.

Phoenix's 21-day record heat streak is three times the previous high. The city has surpassed daily heat records 19 times and equaled two more since the heat streak began on Sept. 24.

Will Phoenix's record-breaking daily heat streak end this week?

Yes, Phoenix's daily heat record streak is coming to an end soon, perhaps as early as Tuesday.

The forecast calls for highs in the 90s Tuesday through Thursday before eventually settling into a fall of highs in the 70s and 80s for the remainder of the week and into the weekend. In fact, overnight temperatures could dip into the 50s this weekend.

Still, the Phoenicians won't be feeling any better about this record-breaking stretch of heat.

By mid-month, Phoenix is poised for its hottest October on record after setting average heat records in June and September this year.

In fact, there have been at least 100 every day since September 23, the second day of fall.

And until this year, the temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city's official readings, had never reached 110 degrees after Sept. 19. This year, however, that mark was reached nine times later than that date, most recently on Oct. 7.
