Penn State University police are investigating the Nov. 2 incident involving Jason Kelce and an unidentified college football fan at the school, PEOPLE can confirm.

Penn State confirmed Monday, Nov. 4, that university police and public safety are investigating the moment the 36-year-old former NFL star destroyed the phone of a heckler who had apparently called Kelce's brother Travis a homophobic slur.

The university did not provide any information about whether Jason, the football fan, was under investigation or how the incident occurred.

PEOPLE has reached out to representatives for Jason and ESPN.

Jason, who was on campus for an appearance on ESPN College game day during the Penn State-Ohio State game, can be seen in several videos posted on social media surrounded by fans as he entered the stadium with a case of beer in his hand.

In now-viral footage, the man asked, referring to Travis, 35, who has been dating Swift, 34, since 2023, with the insult.

Seconds later, Jason turned around, took the phone from the man's hands and smashed it on the ground. The NFL alum then stood in front of the man and said, “Who the hell now?” as other people appeared to intervene.

The owner of the phone, who was wearing a Penn State hoodie at the time of the incident, could be seen walking close behind and appearing to record Jason before the altercation took place.

“It looked like a Penn State student was looking at Kelce's face for no reason,” the first X user to post the clip wrote alongside it. “Wild scene in State College.”

In footage shared by another user on Sometime, he appeared to say to Jason: “Give me my phone bro.”
