Penalties nearly wipe out Texas Longhorns against Vanderbilt

The Texas Longhorns escaped with a 27-24 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday, but not without some unforced errors.

What unfortunately became a trend this season was that the Longhorns took far too many penalties against them for their liking. Texas had 10 penalties for 107 yards on the day, compared to Vanderbilt's four penalties for 35 yards.

These weren't small punishments either, as most of them had major consequences. On the offensive side of the ball, several attacks stalled due to possession and unsportsmanlike conduct, especially towards the end of the game. On the defensive side, the Commodores got three first downs due to the Longhorns' penalties, including one on a fourth down that Texas would have otherwise stopped.

Texas may have gotten the win this time, but the number of penalties is simply unacceptable.

“The 10 penalties were all like major penalties, you know, they weren't minimal like false starts,” head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the game. “Holding fines and DPIs, obviously grossly raping the passerby there. And those penalties resulted in points and/or took points off our board. Something we have to clean up.”

As mentioned, penalties have been a problem for the Longhorns all season. They now have seven or more penalties in six of their eight games and an average of 6.9 per game. The only games where they didn't have that many were the season opener against Colorado State (three for 25 yards) and the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma (five for 57 yards).

If this game doesn't serve as a warning for the Longhorns, then something is very wrong. They could have overcome the penalties against a strong Commodores team, but that just isn't enough in the fight for a national championship.
