The New England Patriots are back at Gillette Stadium where rookie Drake Maye will make his first career NFL start. After five weeks of poor offensive performance, the team will turn to the No. 3 overall pick in hopes of getting them back in the win column for the first time since Week 1.

It won't be easy as on the other side is reigning NFL Rookie of the Year CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans, who may be the blueprint for New England while their own rebuild is underway.

First quarter

The Patriots won the throw and put the ball back so the defense was first on the field. CJ Stroud and the Texans immediately went to work as the QB completed his first three passes, moving just outside the red zone. Stroud then found Stefon Diggs for 13 yards on third down, bringing Houston to the five. Then they faced another third down where a pass interference penalty on Marte Mapu put the ball in the one position. Two plays later, Stroud found Tank Dell in the end zone for an early score. Drake Maye received a standing ovation on the field that quickly turned to boos after two consecutive handoffs to Antonio Gibson. Maye's first pass of the day on third down was then thrown away, resulting in a punt.

A 40-yard punt by Bryce Baringer and a 19-yard return by Sims got the Texans' offense going at midfield on their next drive. New England's third-down woes then continued as Tank Dell once again broke man coverage and moved the chains on a 12-yard crosser. Stroud's legs then moved Houston into the red zone. On the next third down, another DPI penalty – this one on Marcus Jones – moved the chains again before Stroud found Mixon out of the end zone for a touchdown. (Patriots 0:14 Texans)

A first-down play-action hit to Kendrick Bourne got New England's offense going, but things went downhill from there. A run stuff set up a third down where Maye overshot an open Pop Douglas and the pass was intercepted.
