  • Oscar will bring rain and strong winds to Cuba and the Bahamas.
  • Tropical Storm Nadine formed overnight east of Belize.
  • Heavy rain is Honduras' biggest threat to Mexico.
  • None of the storms pose a threat to the United States.

Hurricane Oscar strengthens near the Greater Antilles, while Nadine pushes through Central America after a brief lull in the tropics. Both Tropical Storm Nadine and Tropical Storm Oscar have been forming since 2 a.m. Saturday.

Neither system poses a direct threat to the United States, but Nadine could cause flooding in Central America in the coming days, while Oscar brings rain and strong winds to the Bahamas and Cuba.

Oscar is now a hurricane near Hispaniola, southern Bahamas

The Hurricane Hunters flew around Oscar on Saturday afternoon and found that the intensity of the hurricane is much stronger than originally thought. Oscar is the tenth hurricane of the season.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, and a hurricane warning has been issued for eastern Cuba, where tropical storms are expected later this weekend.

Over the weekend it will move west toward the eastern tip of Cuba and the central Bahamas, then turn northeast over the Bahamas next week. Little to no impact from Oscar is expected in Florida.

Further intensification is expected before Oscar approaches eastern Cuba, but given its small size, Oscar could be vulnerable to large changes in intensity.

Damaging winds and several inches of rain are the most likely threats for parts of the Bahamas and eastern Cuba through Monday or Tuesday.

Nadine: A Central American rainmaker

Nadine made landfall near Belize City, Belize, on Saturday afternoon with winds of 60 miles per hour and a large shield of rain stretching across the western Caribbean. Nadine was taken north of Honduras in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued from Belize City, Belize, to Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, meaning tropical storms are expected through the weekend.

Nadine will be pushed west into Guatemala and eastern Mexico over the weekend.

The system poses no threat to the United States.

The biggest threat to Nadine is heavy rains in Belize, Guatemala and southern and eastern Mexico.

As it moves west, it will bring 3 to 8 inches of rain in these counties, with up to 15 inches in some communities.
