OPINION | SAM LANE: Bryant vs. Pulaski Academy sure sounds like fun | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

The regular season is flying by, folks.

A lot was learned about your favorite team at halftime. But there's still a lot to discover, and much of it begins this week.

Top-10 matchups don't come around too often in the regular season, but No. 1 Bryant hosting No. 8 Pulaski Academy has plenty of intrigue to offer.

Those are two of the three highest-scoring offenses in Class 7A, while the defense has also impressed. This game will pit arguably the most dominant Arkansas program of the last 20 years against arguably the most dominant of the last six years.

Sounds like fun?

Here's a closer look at this match and other top games this week.

Projected winner in capital letters

Pulaski Academy (5-0, 2-0 7A-Central) at BRYANT (5-0, 2-0)

Pulaski Academy played its first two conference games in Class 7A, defeating North Little Rock and Little Rock Central by a combined score of 110-14. Pulaski Academy and Bryant have played each other in a preseason charity game for years, but this game will be real and it will be the first time the two will meet in the regular season. Bryant Stadium will be rocking as the Hornets look to defend their home game.

Springdale Har-Ber (1-4, 1-1 7A-West) at SPRINGDALE (5-0, 2-0)

After five seasons of lopsided losses, Springdale appears to have turned things around under fourth-year coach Brett Hobbs. The Bulldogs haven't won five games in a season since 2018 and haven't started 5-0 since Gus Malzahn's last season in 2005. With the momentum, they have a chance to score six wins against the rival Wildcats. Springdale Har-Ber, which has won 16 of the 18 all-time meetings, earned its first win last week against Rogers Heritage.

BENTON (4-1, 2-0 6A-East) at Sheridan (2-3, 1-1)

Benton has looked dominant since the Salt Bowl loss to Bryant. The Panthers are the second-highest scoring team in Class 6A with 48.8 points per game. Sheridan's first season under Kevin Kelley was up and down with losses to Hot Springs Lakeside, Rogers and Jonesboro, but dominant wins over White Hall and West Memphis. The Yellowjackets' main problem is that they allow 36.4 points per game.

Wynne (4-1, 2-0 5A-East) at VALLEY VIEW (5-0, 2-0)

Valley View has made a strong case to be the top team in Class 5A behind Little Rock Parkview. While Valley View dominated Harding Academy's distributed, vertical offense last week, the Blazers will have their work cut out for them this week against Wynne's option attack. The Yellowjackets are 7-3, but have lost their last two meetings.

Dardanelle (4-1, 2-0 4A-4) at CLINTON (5-0, 2-0)

This will be an entertaining matchup between two of Class 4A's best offensive players: Dardanelle quarterback Creed Vega and Clinton running back Rylan Jones. These two have been dominant this season, except for Dardanelle's loss to 4A No. 1 Elkins, which should lead to an exciting game. Clinton has lost five straight to Dardanelle. The difference could be due to Clinton's defense, which is holding opponents to 14.4 points per game.

Ashdown (3-2, 2-0 4A-7) at MALVERN (5-0, 2-0)

Things have been going well for Malvern since John Fogleman returned as head coach. The Leopards are 5-0 for the first time since 2012, during Fogleman's first tenure as coach, with the Class 4A team scoring the second-highest in points at 44.6 points per game. Ashdown, under first-year coach Eric McCaslin, comes into this game with back-to-back wins and is 2-0 in conference play. Malvern have won four of their last five meetings.

Melbourne (4-1, 1-1 3A-2) at MAYFLOWER (5-0, 2-0)

The Mayflower defense hasn't allowed a point in over a month and has won four straight shutouts. That will likely change in the first meeting with Melbourne this week, but it's a good sign that Mayflower has adjusted well to the move to Class 3A. In those four shutouts, the Eagles averaged 38.5 points per game, so the offense wasn't a problem either. Melbourne bounced back from their first loss by beating Quitman last week.

Jessieville (4-1, 2-0 3A-4) vs. GLEN ROSE (2-3, 2-0)

Glen Rose's fierce non-conference competition was evident this season as it opened the season 0-3. But the Beavers have since won two straight games and are atop the conference standings heading into this game. This is the first time since a 5-0 start in 2019 that Jessieville has won at least four of its first five games. The Beavers have historically dominated this series thanks to the long-standing success of former coach Mark Kehner. Steven Kehner celebrated his first win in the series last season with a 49-0 victory.

MARKED TREE (4-1, 2-0 2A-2) at Des Arc (4-1, 2-0)

Marked Tree have rattled off four straight wins since their opening game loss to Newport. Des Arc has won two straight games since being disbanded by Carlisle, the No. 1 team in Class 2A. The Eagles won a shootout against the Indians last season, outscoring them 66-64. Des Arc has allowed a total of 28 points in its four wins, while Newport is averaging 32.6 points per game.
