Statistical analysis of capitals

The Washington Capitals today are like Fred Durst in 2000; They just keep rolling, rolling, rolling and rolling. With Saturday's 7-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, Washington has won three straight and eight of its first 10 games.

Although this game overall wasn't as nice as some of their previous efforts, you can't complain about scoring seven goals. More of this.

  • The Capitals closed this game within the first 20 minutes, scoring five unanswered goals. Katie has put together all the crazy stats about this outbreak in her post for you to check out if you want to check it out. I can talk about the second period, which happens to be the worst period the Capitals have played this season. Even if Columbus didn't really take advantage of what they accomplished, you never want to have a 30-13 out attempt, a 16-7 out shot, and a 16-7 out chance. In the third period, Washington smoothed things over and scored the only goal in the final frame.
  • Connor McMichael And Aliaksei Protas I can't stop scoring. McMichael has scored seven goals in his last seven games to lead the team, while Protas has had three straight multi-point games.
  • Alex Ovechkin scored again, bringing his total to 859 career goals. The Great Eight are just 36 goals away from overtaking Wayne Gretzky for the all-time goals record. His six goals in 10 games is on a pace of 49 goals in 82 games. The 39-year-old winger has scored eight points (4g, 4a) in his last three games.
  • Trevor van Riemsdyk scored 14 points (14a) in 70 games last season. He has already scored seven points (7a) in 10 games this season. He is currently tied in total points with names like Moritz Seider, Rasmus Dahlin, Lane Hutson, Dougie Hamilton, Roman Josi and Evan Bouchard. I've always been a big TVR fan, but even I think, damn, this is a hot start.
  • Dylan Strome is tied for eighth in the NHL with 16 points (4g, 12a) in 10 games. With his current performance rate, he is on track for a 131 point season.
  • I hate to complain about refereeing, especially in a 7-2 win, but one of my least favorite things in hockey is when a team gets a big boost and then the referees actively act as if they no longer exist . I thought there was a lot of strange charity towards Columbus on the part of the officials. There was only one power play for the home team, and it was a very short one, an obvious icing call is brought back to center ice because the Blue Jackets complained, quick offside decisions and Logan Thompson didn't get a whistle after the puck was under him for three seconds. The worst thing is to lead the game management.
  • Since losing to the New Jersey Devils in their home opener, the Caps are 5-0 in the Metropolitan Division. Let's hope they make it 6-0 tonight against a super tough Carolina Hurricanes team. I think this will be a deadline loss, but I've also already learned not to doubt this team for 2024-25.
