Novak Djokovic denied his 100th title as Jannik Sinner won the Shanghai Masters final – result and live reaction

Rafael Nadal announces his retirement from professional tennis after 23 years

Jannik Sinner denied Novak Djokovic the 100th title of his career by winning the final of the Shanghai Masters as the world No. 1 claimed his third straight victory against the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

The 37-year-old Djokovic was aiming to become only the third man in the Open era to win a hundred titles, after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer, who sat in the audience alongside Carlos Alcaraz.

But the 23-year-old Sinner continued his dominant form on the hard courts by winning his third ATP 1000 tournament of the year, winning 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a close final in an hour and 36 minutes prevailed.

The first set was close and service-dominated, but the Australian Open and US Open champion raised his game and won the tiebreak when Djokovic made a crucial error at the net, handing Sinner set points.

And the Italian extended his lead into the second round when he beat Djokovic for the first time in the match with a stunning forehand winner. Sinner remained solid on serve and didn't have a single break point all match as he wrapped up his seventh title of the year, denying Djokovic a piece of tennis history.

I remember when Sinner beat Djokovic twice in two weeks at the end of last season and thinking how big that would be for his mentality in 2024.

As a two-time Grand Slam champion, he doesn't seem to choke in such situations, even against a great champion like Djokovic.

Sinner remains stable on serve while Djokoivc fires a long return. Another big serve from Sinner goes out of bounds and he follows it with a drive volley on the forehand and catches the line!

TWO championship points for Sinner.

It's all or nothing for Djokovic now, but he takes the first few points on serve as the crowd supports him.

Actually a love game for Djokovic when Sinner nets on the backhand return. On to the Italian…

Djokovic stretches his arms to the sky after a wild forehand miss. Sinner is now on the rise, the Italian fires a huge forehand winner and is 40-0.

Another big backhand miss from Djokovic and Sinner are still a game away. The Italian only needs one more serve and doesn't have a break point the entire game.

Djokovic is trying to hold on. The 37-year-old doesn't show much emotion because he knows that he is facing a strong opponent in the young Italian.

Sinner forces 40-30 with a forehand down the stretch and returns with great power. But Sinner nets the backhand return. Hold on for the Serb.

Oh. Another chance for Sinner as Djokovic goes to the net and the Italian produces the backhand pass down the line.

0-30. Djokovic makes his way through the Sinner defense on the forehand. But here come the first break points of the game!

Sinner lands a fierce backhand deep and Djokovic coughs up the mistake on the volley! Djokovic saves the first with an ace.

Can he save the second one? WINNER FROM SINNER! WOW! Recording the game from the world number 1! Djokovic pushed him wide, but Sinner fired the forehand winner down the line!

Sinner came out of an error-filled game and held against Djokovic after being brought to 40-30. Sinner landed a crosscourt forehand down the line while Djokovic pushed his return wide.

There is still no breaking point, but we are getting closer!

Sinner senses his chance. With the score at 40:30, the world number 1 falls back on Djokovic's second serve and returns early, which forces the miss. Djokovic was happy with a score of 40-0, but has to face a duel for the first time in his game.

However, Sinner nets with the running backhand before Djokovic gets out of trouble. He lands the first serve and then delivers the forehand winner behind Sinner, who is frustrated at his inability to reach break point.

Djokovic lands a few shots on Sinner's first serve game and responds well to the Italian's forehand angle to force the miss.

It makes it 40-30, but Sinner hits a nice backhand. Djokovic nets on the track. We still haven't seen a deuce point.
