Republican candidate Donald Trump has been elected to a second, non-consecutive term as US President.

What was expected to be a neck-and-neck race against his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, turned out to be a significant victory for Mr Trump – the first convicted felon to win the keys to the White House.

Mr. Trump has said he does not believe a federal abortion ban is necessary and would let individual states decide their laws.

However, he said any legislation should provide exceptions for rape, incest and the health of the mother.

Mr. Trump's three Supreme Court nominees were part of a majority that failed Roe v. Wade in 2022 – Women will be stripped of their legal right to an abortion.

Tariffs

Mr. Trump, who said tariffs are “the most beautiful word in the world,” has proposed a 60% levy on Chinese imports and 10% on imports from other countries.

Critics of the measures said rising tariffs would ultimately lead to higher prices for American consumers.

During his speech in Florida on Wednesday, as he declared he had won the presidency just hours before the official results were announced, Trump said: “I'm not going to start a war, I'm going to stop wars.”

The statement was consistent with his claims during his campaign, as the president-elect said he could end the war in Ukraine – which was hit by a full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022 – within 24 hours.

But Mr. Trump forgot to say how he would achieve this.

He has suggested that Ukraine may have to give up some of its territory if a peace deal is to be reached, an idea that Ukraine has consistently rejected.

The 78-year-old has also expressed support for Israel's war against Hamas, the militant Palestinian group in the besieged Gaza Strip that waged that war the October 7th massacre last year.

But he called on Israel to halt its offensive, which has killed more than 43,000 people in Gaza in nearly 13 months, according to Palestinian health authorities.

Mr Trump has promised to reinstate the policies of his first term between 2016 and 2020.

This includes the so-called “travel ban” on Muslim-majority countries, although the draconian measure sparked several legal battles when it was introduced.

The Republican also promised to introduce sweeping new regulations, including restricting asylum access at the U.S.-Mexico border and launching the largest deportation operation in American history.

He has said he will use the National Guard and, if necessary, federal troops to achieve his goal, and he has not ruled out setting up detention centers to process people for deportation.

Another controversial proposal from the president-elect is the removal of protected legal status for certain population groups such as Haitians or Venezuelans.

Mr. Trump has pledged to maintain the sweeping 2017 tax cut he signed while in office, and his economic team has discussed another round of tax cuts for individuals and businesses that go beyond those passed in his first term.
