NFL trade deadline rumors: Za'Darius Smith's vague post on what we're hearing

NFL trade deadline day is almost upon us. Unlike most trade deadlines in professional sports, the NFL's version is a bit quiet. That could be especially true this year since deals were made weeks ago, including the Cleveland Browns' WR trade Amari Cooper.

With a 2-7 record and an expensive roster, NFL trade deadline rumors are swirling around the Browns. During their loss in Week 9, a report came out that DE Za'Darius Smith would travel to the Detroit Lions on Sunday or Monday.

Sunday evening the rumor came that TE David Njoku was also available outside of Cleveland's roster.

The report about when and where Smith would be traded turned out to be untrue as we woke up on Tuesday morning, he was still on the Browns roster and had something to say:

Smith has since deleted the following post:

There are many ways to interpret the post, including saying that Smith is not being traded or is not being traded where he wants to be traded.

What we've heard in the last few days is that at least three teams are interested in Smith, including the Atlanta Falcons and Lions. At some point since Sunday, the Falcons thought they had made Cleveland the best offer, but no deal materialized.

The Browns provided Smith with fourth-round value in a trade but had not received that value as of Monday night. While Smith is expected to hit free agency at the end of the year, GM Andrew Berry's holding on to his value isn't just about this trade, but future negotiations as well.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler had similar information:

Other things we heard about the quick NFL trade deadline:

  • The Washington Commanders have reported to CB Greg Newsome II
  • Jack Conklin has drawn interest from at least one team
  • If a young player that Cleveland likes is available, they would be willing to be a buyer to acquire someone under contract next year or they believe they can extend quickly

We'll keep you updated on everything we hear as NFL trade deadline day progresses
