It's already been an eventful day for the Kansas City Chiefs. The team announced early Wednesday morning that it had indeed made a trade for a wide receiver.

After months of speculation, the Chiefs went out and traded for Tennessee Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. As part of the deal, the Chiefs sent Tennessee a fifth-round pick that has a chance of becoming a fourth-round pick based on playing time and a Super Bowl appearance; interesting terms to say the least.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has looked good at best in recent weeks, but the Chiefs have continued to win thanks to their strong defense and the offense that made enough plays to remain undefeated.

Now Mahomes has a former All-Pro wide receiver in his arsenal and while Hopkins isn't what he once was, I expect this change of scenery will pay off.

What's fascinating about all of this is an emerging report that the Chiefs were in talks for not only Hopkins, but also LA Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

The Rams had announced they were willing to trade Kupp this week, but the Chiefs weren't willing to settle for Los Angeles' asking price, according to a statement from Los Angeles The Athletics Dianna Russini.

The Rams made it public that they wanted a second-rounder in exchange for Kupp and were willing to pay a portion of Kupp's salary in exchange for the pick. But Kansas City only met half of that equation.

The Chiefs liked the idea that LA was willing to pay a portion of Kupp's salary, but they wouldn't back down from giving up a higher draft pick.

Oddly enough, both wide receivers come with risks. Early in his career, Hopkins remained largely healthy. However, Hopkins' health has deteriorated in recent years as he has struggled with some more serious problems.

The same applies to Kupp, who was recently placed on injured reserve again. Kupp has also suffered some serious injuries in recent years, and the Chiefs likely took that into account in trade discussions.

Giving up a second-round pick in exchange for a guaranteed healthy Kupp would be one thing, but knowing that the stud wideout hasn't exactly been in good health over the last few seasons is a good reason to pause. Last year, Kupp missed five games due to injury after missing eight in 2022.

Fans' mouths are probably watering when they think of Kupp in Kansas City, and rightly so. When healthy, he is still one of the best wide receivers in football. But that’s a big “if.” For the Chiefs, forgoing a Day 3 pick for another former Pro Bowler and All-Pro instead seemed like the right course of action.
