HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono has been re-elected to a third term.

But this time she will return to a Republican-controlled Senate.

The Democrat defeated his Republican challenger Bob McDermott in Tuesday's general election with 283,454 votes, the second copy said.

Hirono spoke to Hawaii News Now shortly after the Associated Press announced her re-election, before Hawaii election officials released the first printout.

She said she wouldn't mind seeing red.

“I intend to use my voice to fight for all the programs that support our families, like further reducing the cost of prescription drugs and housing assistance, all the things we care about.” I will continue to do that raise my voice,” Hirono said.

“We know what hard times are, so we know what is right and what is wrong. We know our values. The values ​​of decency and support for our families are important, that is what guides us and that will guide me as I move forward,” she said.

Hirono said she was determined to fight Trump's plans as president.

“He made it very clear with Project 2025, abolishing the Department of Education and cutting Social Security and Medicare. These are all the programmatic changes he is going to make that will hurt us all,” Hirono said.

“So you can imagine that I and a whole group of others will continue to raise our voices to fight these types of harmful policies, and he will begin deporting millions of people in our country,” she said.
