New Zealand's long-running battle to win a Test match on Indian soil may be nearing an end as it moves closer to a historic victory in Bengaluru. After decades of trying to overcome India's spin-friendly conditions and impressive home record, the Black Caps are within touching distance of victory. Their last triumph on Indian soil came 36 years ago, in the 1988-89 season. This time, however, India's dramatic second-innings fightback has added significant challenge to New Zealand's seemingly straightforward victory.

The first two days of the Bengaluru Test painted a bleak picture for India. After being bowled out for just 46 runs in their first innings, New Zealand seemed to be in complete control. The Kiwis took advantage and posted a confident total of 402, putting India in a precarious position.

But the hosts responded brilliantly. Sarfaraz Khan scored a crucial century in a stunning display of resilience, while Rishabh Pant came agonizingly close to his own with a shot of 99. Earlier, half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also bolstered India's second innings, taking them to a massive total of 462.

Despite India's heroics in the second innings, New Zealand's target remains modest – just 107 runs. However, the start of their chase was hampered by incessant rain, meaning the visitors only suffered four throws before the match was canceled on matchday four. With the weather threatening to play a crucial role, the Black Caps wonder whether their chance to break a 36-year Test drought in India will be lost.

What happened the last time New Zealand won a Test in India?

New Zealand's last Test victory in India came during the 1988-89 series, in the second Test played in Mumbai. The Kiwis secured a remarkable 136-run victory under the leadership of John Wright – their only success on Indian soil since 1969.

The match started poorly for New Zealand as they found themselves in deep trouble on the first day, falling to 175/8. However, a crucial partnership between John Bracewell and Danny Morrison in the ninth wicket turned the tide.

Bracewell's counter attack rate of 52 helped New Zealand to a respectable total of 236. His aggressive approach against India's bowling attack provided much-needed momentum and Morrison's stubborn resistance at the other end ensured they were on a fighting note.

India's response initially seemed comfortable with Kris Srikkanth and Dilip Vengsarkar building a solid foundation. Srikkanth played aggressively and moved towards a well-deserved century. However, the introduction of New Zealand talisman Richard Hadlee changed the course of the game.

Hadlee, one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, dismissed Srikkanth for 94 just when the first set seemed on the verge of deciding the game. Hadlee then prevailed through India's middle order and India were bowled out for 234, giving New Zealand a small but significant lead.

New Zealand's second innings was another hard-fought battle with the Indian spinners, particularly Arshad Ayub, causing significant problems. Despite the difficulties, New Zealand managed to score 279, taking India to a challenging target of 282.

On the final day, John Bracewell played the hero again. His off-spin dismantled India's batting line-up, taking six wickets for 51 runs. Bracewell's all-round performance, combined with Hadlee's deadly bowling, secured New Zealand the memorable 136-run victory.
