New York Yankees fans embarrassed themselves again in game three

The New York Yankees lost the first two games of the 2024 World Series in heartbreaking fashion to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Game one ended with a historic walk-off grand slam hit by Freddie Freeman, and New York had an opportunity to come from behind in the second inning thanks to a strikeout by Anthony Volpe and a fly ball by Jose Trevino when the bases were loaded ninth inning were loaded.

But with game three moving the series back to New York, the series was far from over.

Yankee Stadium has a reputation for being one of the toughest venues in the sport, as the infamous “Bleacher Creatures” create a hostile environment. This hostile environment was expected to give the Yankees a boost, with some fan support potentially helping Aaron Judge regain his regular season form.

There's a hostile atmosphere and then there's what the Yankees fans did at the start of the third game. Multiple reporters confirmed that New York fans chanted “F*** you Freddie” while Dodgers star Freddie Freeman struck out in the first inning. He responded by hitting a two-run home run to give LA an early lead.

This was just the latest incident in which Yankees fans displayed their usual mix of classless behavior and unnecessary vulgarity. For example, when a large gathering at a New York sports bar began cheering when Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani was sidelined in the second game with a shoulder injury. Or turn off the TV.

But it wasn't just that. Videos repeatedly showed New York Yankees fans leaving the World Series early in droves. Despite being just four runs behind in a must-win game.

Already in the 7th inning the fans streamed onto the street.

Say profanities to the opposing team, go down early, give up, and then start leaving long before the game is over. The first home World Series game in 15 years and it ends with tens of thousands of empty seats. Even though the Yankees were just one baserunner away from putting the game-winning run at the plate. Not exactly to burnish her fan credentials.

Are New York Yankees fans too distracted by other teams?

David Ortiz noted that the Bronx crowd wasn't into the game from the start, after Fat Joe's disastrous performance before the first pitch.

Other reporters noted the same thing about the disappointing atmosphere in the stadium.

One of the best parts of the World Series experience is the crowd noise, excitement and energy in the stands. Yankees fans failed to deliver. Yes, the Dodgers took an early 2-0 lead, but two runs is hardly enough to give up a game, especially with an offense featuring powerhouse stars like Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton and yes, even Aaron Judge.

Maybe Yankees fans couldn't focus on baseball since the Dallas Cowboys and LA Lakers are also in action this month. Or perhaps many of the “real” fans were priced out. But many of the videos of fans leaving the stadium were taken high up on the upper deck, where tickets were “cheaper.”

Regardless, it was an embarrassing performance for a fan base that likes to be considered among the best in sports. Monday evening should finally put an end to this discussion.
