New images from “SWAT” Season 8 reveal what’s next for Hondo and the Twenty Squad

Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore) and Twenty Squad are back for one last hurray. After a double cancellation scare, both of which occurred last year, fans were able to persuade CBS' top brass to order the troupe to do another dance. SWATSeason 8, which seems to be the final chapter for now (or is it?), premiered on October 18th. The premiere episode, titled “Vanished,” was as exciting as it was emotional, offering more of the same high-stakes action to be expected in the upcoming episodes. CBS has teased what's next for Hondo and the Twenty Squad with a new set of images and plot details for Episodes 2 and 3.

The team looks very different, a result of the cancellations that led to many cast members moving on to other projects. Regardless, the new members of the force prove to be just as capable as those we previously knew. Episode 1 introduced Devin Gamble, played by Fire in Chicago'S Annie Ilonzeh which is already making an impression and is proving to be an important addition to the unit. In the next mission, the team has to take action against an unscrupulous gang of robbers. The synopsis for Episode 2, titled “Gang Unit,” states: “When a series of brutal hidden house robberies spills into Los Angeles, the team teams up with the sheriff’s gang unit to expose a violent gang that has no one Lets witnesses live.”

SWAT Season 8, Episode 2, titled “Life,” follows the 20 Squad who “face a prison hostage situation, only to find themselves in even greater danger when a bomb explodes, freeing high-security prisoners from their cells Someone with a personal grudge against Hondo. New member Gamble is once again the focus of both missions, as indicated in the images. “Life” was written by Sarah Alderson and led by Oz Scott.

In addition to Ilonzeh and Moore, SWAT Season 8 also stars Jay Harrington as a deacon Rochelle Aytes who plays Hondo's wife Nichelle Carmichael, who only appears sporadically as she recently signed on for a major commitment on the new CBS show, Watson.

What are the chances of another “SWAT” renewal?

Technically, CBS didn't cancel the show. The broadcaster only extended the crime series for another episode. Placing just one order for one season is likely a strategy to test the show's popularity and determine whether it's worth a larger investment. Therefore, his fate could still depend on the ratings. The seventh season of the series has also recently become available on Netflix, giving it a chance at greater visibility. Until CBS puts the final nail in the coffin, we can keep hope alive as we enjoy the lengthy eighth season, which is back to 22 episodes after a shortened seventh season.

SWAT airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on the CBS Television Network. The episodes can also be streamed on Paramount+.
