NC State QB Grayson McCall is retiring from football

North Carolina State quarterback Grayson McCall has hung up his pads and helmet for good.

McCall announced his resignation in an Instagram post on Wednesday evening.

In the lengthy statement, McCall, 23, said the decision to end his football career was due to an injury “from which I cannot come back,” adding that he will continue to keep the sport as part of his life by working as a trainer.

“Unfortunately my dream was dashed. As you all know, I have struggled with injuries throughout my career, but I am not coming back from this injury,” McCall wrote. “I did everything I could to keep going, but the good Lord called me here to serve in another place. Brain specialists, my family and I have concluded that it is in my best interest to hang up the boots.”

McCall suffered two concussions this season at NC State, the first occurring on Sept. 14 against Louisiana Tech, forcing him to miss two games.

The second incident occurred on Oct. 5 against Wake Forest in his first game since the previous concussion, according to The News & Observer.

The QB slipped while running with the ball and was hit so hard that he lost both his mouth guard and his helmet.

He had to be carted off the field.

It was the second straight season that the graduate transfer's season was cut short due to injury.

In his final year at Coastal Carolina, McCall had his season ended early after suffering a helmet-to-helmet hit against Arkansas State and was diagnosed with a concussion upon admission to a local hospital.

McCall was one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football while playing at Coastal Carolina, where he threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns in five seasons.

This year he appeared in four games and completed 53 passes for 518 yards and three touchdowns.

“From Porter Ridge to Conway and last year in Raleigh, this journey was better than any dream I could have ever imagined,” McCall wrote. “This game has taken me places I never thought I would go and has shaped my family and me in ways I never could have imagined. I have created so many memories that will stay with me forever and I am so grateful for that.”

He added: “I have no regrets throughout my career and I can be proud of that.”
