According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors did not reach an agreement on a contract extension before Monday's deadline.

Kuminga remains a projected starter for Wednesday's season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers despite his now uncertain future in Golden State, Slater noted.

Action Network's Matt Moore added on January 21 that the Dubs were “ready to part ways with the unfortunate Jonathan Kuminga.”

Slater and Charania previously reported on May 13, 2023 that Kuminga would have preferred a trade last summer if he had not played a larger role in Golden State in 2023-24.

Ultimately, he posted career highs across the board with 74 games played, 46 starts and averages of 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

The 22-year-old was reportedly frustrated with his diminishing role in the 2023 playoffs. He averaged just 6.1 minutes per game in 10 postseason contests and did not appear in three games overall.

However, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said during an appearance on Tim Kawakami's podcast that Kuminga could have earned more playing time if he had become more versatile.

“He’s a foursome,” Kerr said of Kuminga. “For him to take the next step, he has to be able to play the three as an offensive player. He can play the three defensively; he can really guard one through four. But offensively, to play the three, you have. “You have to be really skilled in this league today, you have to see the field, you have to be able to make plays. And right now I think he's much more of a four-man offensively than a three-man. “

Despite the reports and apparent frustration, Kuminga told reporters in February that his relationship with Kerr had improved following those comments, making it appear both sides were ready to prepare for the future.

Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype then reported on June 24 that the Warriors would only consider trading Kuminga if he was included in a deal for an All-NBA player.

The Warriors selected Kuminga seventh overall in the 2021 draft, and he continued to have a solid rookie season, averaging 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 70 games while shooting 51.3 percent from the floor and 33.6 percent shot from the depths.

His role increased slightly in the 2022-23 season and he averaged 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 67 games while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor and 37.0 percent from distance .

He was particularly impressive during a 21-game stretch when Andrew Wiggins was away from the team due to a personal issue, averaging 13.2 points in 24.2 minutes per game.

However, Kuminga's role with the Warriors hasn't increased much since last season, as he often played behind Andrew Wiggins on the bench and averaged 26.3 minutes per game.

Now Kuminga will be one of the more interesting players to become a restricted free agent next summer. He still has the potential to develop into a star in the NBA, and a strong performance in the 2024-25 season would significantly increase his chances of a big payday.
