NASCAR's Elton Sawyer explains the controversial ending to the Xfinity Series Roval race

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Roval race ended in controversy Elton Sawyer broke down what happened. During his appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Sawyer, the NASCAR senior vice president of competition, discussed how the caution flag had been lifted before Parker Kligerman could have accepted the white flag that would have made the race official.

“It took too long,” Sawyer said. “I met with our team in the hour after Saturday evening. We went over what happened there. We made some adjustments to the camera angles overnight so our replay operator could see this more quickly and relay this information to the race director. We made an adjustment on Saturday night and felt like we were in a much better place on Sunday. This is a call we wanted to get to quicker, but you need to have the information.”

Kilgerman led the Roval race with two laps to go. But when Leland Honeyman When he hit a barrier, a caution was not immediately issued and Kligerman's team believed they had won the race. Instead, the race went into overtime, and Sam Mayer deserved the win. It was a tough loss for Kligerman, as the win would have put him in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs.

“This hurts,” Kligerman said, according to NASCAR.com. “In the cooldown I said I wanted to cry, but I don't want to, and when I think about it, it came close a few times. I just really enjoyed doing this and I was so grateful to have the opportunity to be here and be at this level and make a career out of it. And I just love the intensity and the pressure. And I really, really wanted that.

“I just thought that was a poetic thing – if I could only do one thing it would be to win this damn race like that and see some of the best in the world in SVG (Shane van Gisbergen) and AJ (Allmendinger), Sam Mayer, the is now Roval champion. I thought I was racing at the highest level I’ve ever competed, but I didn’t.”
