Moving to Canada: Federal Government Website Prepared for Traffic Surge

Depending on how the results unfold south of the border, Americans could start looking for a way to move to Canada.

In 2016, when Donald Trump was first elected President of the United States, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website crashed due to a surge in traffic.

While it can't be said that the US election results were the sole cause of the increase in traffic, Google searches for “How do I move to Canada?” tend to increase on US election nights.

The search term increased this year as Election Day approached, including a significant increase the day after US President Joe Biden's debate with Trump, which would mark the beginning of the end of his re-election campaign.

Those looking for immigration information are directed to Canada.ca, the government's main website. How will a possible increase in traffic be handled?

A spokesperson for Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) tells CTV News Ottawa that Canada.ca was designed with high traffic in mind.

“The Canada.ca website is the primary website through which the Canadian and international public can access reliable and authoritative information from the Government of Canada. Canada.ca is specifically designed to automatically scale as needed to accommodate high volumes of traffic,” it said in an email.

Regardless of whether Americans want to move to Canada, the U.S. election comes at a time when the country is reducing the number of newcomers it accepts. The federal government recently announced a plan to reduce immigration rates by 20 percent as many Canadians struggle with housing and affordability issues.
