Michkov's first NHL goal causes excitement despite the Flyers loss

Michkov does not speak the English language well enough to conduct a post-game interview on his own, so he was not made available after the game. However, his teammates were happy to rave about the potential star.

“I think sometimes the language barrier can make it a little humorous,” Frost said. “He's a passionate kid and wants to win, wants to score and then you know, TK (Travis Konecny). When you get TK in that environment, I think we have fun and hopefully he has fun being here too.”

Matvei's enthusiasm was contagious among his teammates. His arrival has raised expectations for the Flyers, who have failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the last four seasons. The different methods he used to score against Edmonton showed his willingness to get into difficult areas of the ice and take advantage of opportunities.

“He likes to score. He’s in the areas,” Tortorella said. “I think that’s what attracted his teammates to him as a freshman in the spotlight. Not the goals tonight, but also some of the other things he's doing. He helps our power play.” He's a dynamic guy, which is something we've talked about here since I've been here the last three years, which is that those are the type of players you need to add to your roster if you're going to come through here, to try to become a better team player.”

Michkov has impressive offensive skills, but has also shown a willingness to do whatever it takes to win. As important as the two goals against Edmonton were, the rookie blocked two shots as the Flyers tried to maintain a 3-2 lead in the third period.

“He is a dynamic player, not only because of his passing ability, but also because of his ability to hold onto a puck and get out of traffic,” Tortorella said. “I think it really benefits his teammates. He's out here also blocking shots and doing all the other things that create that team camaraderie, that team concept. This is really important.”
