Meta testing improved cross-posting from Instagram to threads

Threads is working on a streamlined Instagram integration that would make it easier to share your IG content directly to Threads.

As you can see in this example shared by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, the Threads team wants to add Instagram itself as a source for your attachments, so you can then choose from any posts or Reels you've shared on your connected IG account.

Again, in the composer options, you can see the additional Instagram logo that shows an overview of all your IG posts so you can easily reshare your IG content.

Which makes sense given the connection between Instagram and Threads. But at the same time, what you publish to each app is likely to be very different, and republishing everything to both apps may not be ideal.

This could be particularly annoying for people who follow you in both cases, as they will see double images of your updates. But then again, the Threads team probably has the data on reshares and knows that many people already share their IG posts and Reels on Threads, so they're exploring that option.

In fact, earlier this year Meta launched a test of automated post sharing between Instagram and Threads, which would allow users to turn on cross-posting for all of their IG updates.

Thread cross-posting

Meta hasn't provided any updates to this test, but perhaps this new variant could serve as an alternative instead of just sharing everything automatically.

Because this definitely seems like an exaggeration and in reality an obvious push by Meta to increase the amount of content in threads. In this process, your IG caption would become the post text in threads, and while this might be attractive to some creators who simply want to maximize their reach, it doesn't seem like the best way to go.

Simplified custom cross-posting would be better, alternatively this is an improvement. It's just not clear yet whether this is an alternative or a supplement.

Anyway, it looks like we'll soon have a simplified Instagram cross-posting option in Threads in some form, which could lead to more YouTubers posting more Threads updates.

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that it is currently testing this feature internally and does not yet have a timetable for a public launch.
