“Mass Effect” TV series in the works at Amazon

A “Mass Effect” TV series is officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios, diversity learned exclusively.

Daniel Casey will write the adaptation and executive produce. Karim Zreik will serve as executive producer under his Cedar Tree Productions banner, with EA's Ari Arad and Michael Gamble also serving as executive producers. Cedar Tree is currently under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

The exact details of the plot are kept secret.

Back in 2021, it was reported that Amazon was in negotiations to develop a “Mass Effect” TV series, but there have been no updates on the project so far. There were also various attempts to develop a feature film based on the games, but the project never came to fruition.

The first Mass Effect game was released in 2007 and received rave reviews. Since then, there have been three more games in the main series, with Mass Effect: Andromeda debuting in 2017. There have also been several mobile games in the franchise, as well as an animated film, novels, comics and other media.

The story of the first three Mass Effect games revolves around Commander Shepard, a human soldier in the 22nd century who tries to save humanity from a race of aliens called the Reapers. “Andromeda” moved the games significantly further into the future with a new protagonist, and a fifth game is also in the works. The franchise is developed by BioWare and now published by EA.

Casey most recently worked on the screenplay for F9: The Fast Saga. He is also known for his work on films such as the sci-fi drama Kin and rewrote 10 Cloverfield Lane. He is repped by CAA, Writ Large and Hansen Jacobson.

Previously, Zreik was an executive at the now-defunct Marvel television unit under Jeph Loeb. During his time at Marvel, he served as executive producer on hit series such as “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “The Punisher” and “Legion,” among others. Zreik is represented by Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.

Arad has previously produced adaptations of the games “Borderlands,” “Uncharted,” and “Ghost in the Shell.” He also executive produced “Iron Man,” “Ghost Rider” and the 2006 television series “Blade.”
