Marina Squerciati on Burgess' detective test, Ruzek support

This week Chicago PD This is what we've been waiting for: An officer is promoted to detective!

In the November 6 episode of “Pawns,” Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is tested as she tries to advance in her career. “I think it took a long time,” Squerciati tells TV Insider. “I think she's really excited. I think she's really nervous. If you want something so bad, do you kill it? I don't know. I think she deserves it and I hope she gets it.”

The good news is that she has great support at home from her fiancé Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger). “I know Adam is generous as a partner and will step in more at home while she's in college,” notes Squerciati.

Now that she's working on her detective badge, Burgess's eyes are being opened to other aspects of the job that she hadn't necessarily considered before. “Burgess is tested by politics and dirt, unaware of how much Voight is protecting her from the power that has somehow tainted or made other people stronger,” Squerciati reveals. “It could go either way. and I don’t know if Burgess knows exactly how to deal with it.”

Stern is right that this has been a long time coming; Burgess, Ruzek and Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) were officers in all twelve seasons. But as showrunner Gwen Sigan explained to us, this promotion was all about finding the right story.

“I think it's someone who's wanted it for a while and made a lot of sense for us,” Sigan shared in September. “In the (writers') room we've talked about this plot for so long, but how do you turn it into a story? How do you make it interesting? How do you make it something that really says something about who that person is and isn’t just a piece of paper?”

The timing is also perfect: another officer (Toya Turner's Cook) has joined the secret service, there is a need for a higher-ranking member and the test is imminent.

What do you hope to see as Burgess pursues her detective badge? Let us know in the comments section below.
